I have a 77CJ5.I'm planning on just keeping it and I'd like to put another motor in it.The jeep has 258 with stock 3spd.The motor I want to install is also a 258 but has 4spd and is in my scout frame.Seems like it would work....wadaya think?

Is the 4 speed from a jeep or from the scout? Check out this link to help tell what tranny you have(http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmission_gateway.htm) What I have found is that from 1970-1975 Most parts interchange and from 1976-mid 80's. Now that is without adapters If you have the cash you can by adapters for almost any swap. Are you just wanting to have the 4-speed in the cj5? Or is the motor better in the scout frame?

Hey Mark.Thanks for the link.
The motor is better in the scout. The scout is a 74.There are no leaks on motor, case or trans. From what I've heard a 4spd won't give me an extra (HWY) gear-just means I'll be shifting more.Does that sound right?
Just checked out trans and its a borg warner T-19.Is that bad or good? Thanks,Daniel

True, the 3 speed and 4 speed both end up with final drive ratio of 1:1 in top gear. You need an overdrive tranny to get better highway performance.
The T-19 may or may not have the granny low as first gear. If it does, that would be a bonus for rockcrawling/trailriding, if not then you'd just end up shifting one more time to get to 1:1

Thanks again for the info.Granny sounds good as long as 2,3&4 would accelerate like my current 3spd.If it has no granny then I'd be accelerating like my wifes 5spd tracker. That would suck.I have not driven the scout but the PO said that it would truly crawl in first and 4WD.He drove it around the yard with no gas pedal or brakes...
I'll need to find out if current CJ5 trans support will work on T-19.
The front axle on my CJ is supposed to be a IH axle.It does have the IH logo on hubs and diff is same as my scout. The one on CJ is narrow and ones on scout are wide...I wish I could put the 373 axles off scout in CJ but they wont fit unless I cut and move leaf spring mounts. The wider scout axles give better stance, have new ball joints bendix disc brakes and all new steering bushings...Anyone have experience with that kindswap. Thanks

The Scout front axle also have zero degrees of caster built in. To do it right, u should grind the knuckles off and rotate some caster into it. Simply adjusting thru the leaf spring perch will point the front pinion down in the ground.

Changing those axles wouldn't be a huge deal as far as moving the perch I have had several cj's that the PO just bought more perches and left the factory ones in place. I cut mine off but to each his own. I'm not following the caster issues, hunterdan are you thinking of lifting it or doing a soa lift or was you just going to swap them out because of all the new parts and wider stance?

Basically just for the disc brakes, stance and new stuff on the scout axles.I only plan on installing the 5.75 shackles I bought from you in the front and getting some for the rear(2.75" lift) on the CJ.I just put the 16" rock crawler wheels and some 265x75x16 tires on the jeep donated by the FJ project.I've had no interest on the FJ project FS til I took off the wheels. Now I have a message wanting it all...Ha Ha.Here is the jeep with the new wheels and tires...much better I think???

IMO, now you have the jeep look but I still wish you would have sold me those 16" wheels. ha ha

Thanks I'm happier with the new look.If I see some wheels like mine I'll PM ya.
