Would you run this filter?

Had the oil changed in my Jeep last week. It's a '97 Cherokee (4.0/5-Speed). I normally wouldn't take it somewhere but I've been extremely busy with work lately and a buddy told me to bring it by his shop and drop it and he'd do it for free. I brought 6 quarts and an oil filter to him and dropped the Jeep off.

I picked it up and have been driving it for a week. I'm pretty anal about checking fluid levels and do it on all 4 of mine and my wife's vehicles on Sunday's. I was looking and saw that the oil filter had a dent in it and scratches. I texted him and he said he tightened it by hand and then used an oil filter removal tool to tighten it more. I sent him a picture and he said that it's not going to hurt anything with it like that. It's not leaking anywhere and the Jeep has great oil pressure (55psi cold and 40-45+psi warm and that's with an aftermarket mechanical gauge). I just want opinions on if you guys would take the time to pull the filter off and change it or leave it? Thanks!

Pull it and throw it out at the next service interval. It's fine as long as it doesn't leak.

It's not leaking anywhere around the filter. Thanks, I was just wanting to make sure it would be okay to run it. I assumed it would be as I've ran it all week with no issues at all but better to be safe than sorry.

It's just slightly scratched and dented, its fine. It won't affect filter performance at all.

I'm slightly more concerned that a professional shop felt the need to tighten it that much, which is totally unnecessary and can actually cause leaks from face distortion.

I really wouldn't worry about it though, just keep an eye for seal leaks and let it go.

I agree. I've always got it snug, and then go a 1/4-1/2 turn more. I believe that I'm going to leave it alone. I'll just keep an eye out for any leaking around the seal. Like I said, I've driven it every single day for a week now and no leaks so far. Thanks for the input!

the tool he used to make those scratches is from the plier type with teeth to REMOVE a stuck filter.
Shouldn't hurt it's filtering ability at all.
next time take the 20 minutes and change yourself
slap him for doing that to begin with
hand tight and snug is plenty enough for a oil filter.
when he says something about why you slapped him, slap him again and educate him, repeat until he understands
