The tach in the wife's 2010 went bonkers while she drove home from work this afternoon. It was showing 4500rpms @ 45mph. When she got home and shut it off the tach was showing 1500rpm w the motor off. I got home and cranked it, the tach went to 4000 but I could tell it was running normally and no warning lights on. I drove it around and everything was running just fine, going through the autos 5 gears, acceleration, and auto downshifting w the gas peddle lifted. It was definitely was not revving what the tach read. It needed an inspection so took it to a local oil/lube/brake place. I asked them to scan the computer, free while they did the inspection. No codes. A guy that works there said the tach motor is probably shot. It was raining hard when I drove there and on the way home.On the way home I had to stomp the brake to stop the car when someone pulled out in front of me. The peddle went about to the floor. I made it home and checked the fluid and it was inches below full. I cranked it and pumped the peddle for a minute or more and I tried to see if there was brake fluid, at all of the bleeders but everything was wet from driving in the heavy rain and I could not tell. The level did not change. I'm going to do a brake job thurs. and if I don't find a leak or blown seal I'm not gonna be a happy camper. I've been to this place for inspections for a decade at least, but this year it's all new faces/employees.Does anybody think that the car might have been tampered with while I was there or heard of things like this being done before?

It's safe to say some shady shops Have done bad things for business. But I doubt they'd do something that would endanger Life. Things such as belts, hoses, or plug wires, have been tampered with at some shops, as i know of 1 that did. That shop is long gone, after the owners natural death. But, I'd be looking carefully, to find out where the brake fluid has escaped!

The fluid was good when I checked it the third week of may, before we went to the beach.I'll find out whats wrong when I R&R the brakes thurs.

As far as the tach, 2010 what what? I've had temporary success resetting gauges to 0. But that only works for a few key cycles. I'm agreeing with the tech that said it was likely the gauge motor. (Stripped teeth usually, will go up but not down) depending on application you can simply swap in a junkyard cluster or replace just the tach stepper motor if you're so inclined or can get someone to repair it for you. (Plenty of online places, there was one "local" nc4x4 guy that could fix them, but can't remember who)

Thanks, interesting the tach is now working fine. Before it did I just told her to ignore it and drive the the car and the only real need for a tach is if your racing, or driving a manual trans. If it breaks I'm not gonna fix it.
