So I recently had my first flop and I did this:

I was wondering IF windshield frame armor would reduce/prevent this damage. I wend completely on my side, and this was really the extent of my damage.

Several companies make some armor, it looks like this:

or this:

Some places will do custom stuff liek light tabs down near the hinges so you get built in windshield light tabs which I thought was interesting.

But my main question is will the armor stop damage like I had in my flop or reduce it, lets say maybe save the frame, but fubar the glass, AND what if there was a bar on the side like what would look essentially like a mini slider or a hand/grab rail, so it could be used for grabbing getting in out, and to push off the rocks in a flop. WOULD THAT WORK? Or does this type armor NOT REALLY work?

I'm curious as I was actually LOOKING at the armor like the DAY BEFORE the flop, like hmmmmm, I wonder if that works, I wonder if that's something I should think about?........FLOP.:shaking:

EDIT:

In yellow is the standoff/grab handle like I was thinking of.

I dont think it will help in the case of a flop. It will keep the dents out of the side of the window frame, but it will just redistribute the force elsewhere. Basicly you wont have a dent in the side of your window frame but instead you will have a twisted windsheild opening.

Gotcha, so keep the wheels ON THE GROUND, then?

The problem is a hard hit to anything would damage the windshield frame regardless of armour. One of the first two will help to spread the load over a larger area which might help. I don't like the grab handle style.

I think I'm gonna back off a hair and quit trying to be William T. Badass, and take more......sensible lines. This flop was a "that LOOKS doable" and wasn't.

I'm going to get the windshield frame and all the associated damage fixed, and work on more under armor, and work on lines that keep the greasy side down.

I DO wanna cage my rig, it's on my list. Does the list ever end?

My .02 is the guard would work to spread the impact load out.

IF the windshield frame was attached to part of a properly braced cage it might prevent the frame from racking in the event of a really hard hit.

My frame has similar major damage on the other side. I watched the original owner do the damage back in '98 and the glass never broke. Now its passed hands a few (hundred) times and its on my jeep.

I've wondered how much extra protection is needed ? Obviously in a major roll who cares, but i've seen em get dented from a light tap on a tree in just the right spot..

I'd be interested in your frame when you get it replaced. I have a few things I'd like to try on the other side to test some ideas out.. Thinking something along the lines of a light weight internal filler. Maybe a high density type of spray foam something that can be injected through a hole on each side or the entire thing if its not to heavy...

If I can get the frame (I don't see why I couldn't) I'll get it to you.

As soon as the adjuster does their thing I'll take it to get it fixed, I just don't have the time or local shop to do it myself.
