Any algebra people here?

During a road trip, tony drove one-third the distance that lana drove. Mark drives 9 more miles than lana drove. The total distance they drove on the trip was 520 miles. How many miles did each person drive?

This is a problem my 10 year old has tonight. Anyone gotta a clue.:confused:

I'm thinking:

1/3 X -- distance Tony drove
X + 9 -- distance Mark drove
X -- distance Lana drove

(1/3 X) + (X + 9) + X = 520

Solve for X to find out how far Lana went, then calculate the other two based on the equations up top.

Edit: yeah, that works. I won't tell you the answer, though. ;)

I appreciate it Shawn, hell I couldnt figure it out anyways but I will pass it alone to him.

Anyone else wanna comment on it.

N = 520
T = 1/3 L
M = 9+L

L + M + T = 520

L + (L + 9) + 1/3 L = 520

2L + 1/3L = 520 - 9

7/3 L = 511

L = 511 X 3/7

L = 219

M = 228

T = 73

Just that easy!:flipoff2:

in my opinion, it becomes a lot easier if you think in terms of tony, since it eliminates the need for fractional variables.

l=3t
m=3t+9

t+3t+3t+9=520

7t+9=520

7t=511

t=73

Good call. I have to admit that I stumbled for a minute when I got down to the part where I had to add 2 X and 1/3 X. 3/3 X? No? :shaking:
