WTH is this ASO!?

What is this? I've been using it as a sorta Anvil for years. It came from my dad's garage, probably been around since early 80's maybe 70's. He was a pipe fitter/commercial plumber by trade. If I remember there were two of them and this was the larger of the two. Other one was a couple inches smaller. Smaller holes are not tapped.

Looks like a gigantic shitbiscuit! Better get rid of it!
 
Looks like it was supposed to be drilled and tapped and have the center turned out for a bearing, but never made it that far along in the process.
 
by your description of use it is definitely a "ASO".

Anvil Shaped Object. Also a sort of oxymoron. But since you been beating on it I'd carry on. But I am with Matt. It wasn't finish machined and was left for what ever. Looks to me they where maybe large load bearing somethings. The Shallow recess lends to a track or guide on some sort of load bearing rail.
 
All similar to what I was thinking maybe a guide of some sort,
I like ASO I'm going to go with that until something better is discovered.
