Xj 242 t-case????

I have a 2001xj with the 242 t case in it. Will a 231 t case work. I know the shifter positions inside the cab will probably not line up but mechanically will it work? Thanks

it has a roar in it like at certain rpms. i should be able to use my linkage on my 242 with the 231 and it should shift ok right? i thought it was the exhaust roaring but it definantly is the case. maybe the chain is got too much slack in it?
 
Total bolt in Jason. Simply adjust the linkage by putting the case and the shifter in neutral. Then tighten down the jam bolt on the linkage.

chain or bearing thats all thats in their.
the chain in a 242 is pretty stout but its always a posibility.
lemme know if you want me to drive it.
