My ZJ has a rattling catalytic converter that is starting to get on my nerves, and my parents XJ's exhaust is slowly turning itself into rust. I'd like to find something that's Mopar quality, without spending the 800 mopar dollars. The XJ exhaust was replaced about 10 years ago at Meineke, and has seemed cheap since day 1, so I don't want to go that route either.

Another important factor is that I like the quietness of the stock units. I've had loud exhausts before and its just not my cup of tea.

Could I find something off a newer vehicle like a TJ and just weld in some additional lengths of pipe where needed?

What about local muffler shops, quality of the parts and tubing any better than Meineke?

exhaust tubing is exhaust tubing... for the aluminized. some is 16ga, some is 18ga, that I have seen. As far as mufflers, you can get a walker 'quiet-flow' - i.e. stock replacement - muffler from summit for ~$20+shipping. This would probably save you some serious coin on the exhaust installation. That and a 'Thunderbolt' catalytic converter from ebay ~$45.

I'd say you're going to get about 5yrs out of a muffler-shop exhaust system (personal experience).
