My brother bought an XJ from a member on the board here. When he got it the transmission (AW4) would not shift by itself so he has been manually shifting it. Ive heard it could be a TCM problem.

Has anyone on here had any similar problems and could steer me in the right direction on diagnosing it?

thanks,
Jake

Fuse could be blown in the box under the hood. It could need a new TCM. Or possibly the NSS could be saying its in a lower gear.

What year XJ?

Its a 96 I will check the Fuse tomorrow morning when He brings the Jeep by my house. What are common symptoms of a bad NSS?

Thanks for the quick reply

If the NSS is bad it may also have trouble starting in park or neutral on occasion. I would check the fuse first. I don't remember if in 96 they integrated the TCM into the ECM or not, but look under the pass side dash panel at the bottom, there should be a TCM there. I think thats where it is on a 96. little metal box with about 14-16 wires coming into it.

Ok I checked all the Fuses under the hood and everything is good. I also checked the neutral safety switch using the methods via the Haynes manual and it checked out fine. In addition I located the TCM under the pass side dash panel.

What would the next step be? I really don't want to buy a brand new TCM and that not be the problem, Should I try a Junk yard one or something along the lines? Anyway to test it?

Thanks,
Jake

check and make sure that the plugs on the drivers side are plugged in and no loose/cut wires. also check to see that the plugs on the pass side of the motor, at the back, coming out of the main loom and the firewall are plugged in. the harness runs from that spot on the pass side of the motor, up over the bellhousing and back down. check your grounds to the motor too. negative cable should be connected to the block there on the side, but with no starting issues I don't see how that couldn't be hooked up. I'd pick one up at PAP or somewheres like that. I'm sure there is a way to check if the solenoids are good. they are under 15 ohms I believe. http://articles.jeepforum.com/XJ_AW4_TCU_Shift_Mod should get you started on testing that out.

Kelley thanks for the info I will try and look into what you said and take a look at that article as well. I'm gonna try and get my buddy over with his multimeter sometime soon and test all of the wires and what not at the TCU.

The speedo is working, right?

COrrect the Speedo is working
