I've got a 91 Cherokee that I'm going to lightly build to take me across country. Currently it has a HP30 in there that has an internsssseee clicking noise. Not sure what it's from. Doesn't really effect the way it drives just loud as hell.

I ultimately want 4.10 to 4.56 gears not 100% certain. But all it's doing is turning some 31's and being weighted down with gear.

Question is do I pull and dump money into this one?... I.e. Gears, locker, and misc stuff to rebuild it. Or do that to a HP30 I've got lying around from a 1998 Cherokee. Or see if I can find something built.

What's the main differences to early HP30s and later models?

I'd ideally like to swap the rear to and 8.8 with disc. So might me simpler and more cost effective to just find one with a limited slip and 4.10s and put some new perches on it.

Thoughts, ideas and info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I would def swap in the 98 unless you find a deal on one already geared and maybe locked on here.
Are you sure it doesn't already have a locker someone installed? Could be your clicking. If not could be a u joint or something with the disco.

I haven't looked. I was actually going to peak today. I assumed it was a ujoint. The PO never mentioned a locker up front.

So a non disco I don't have to worry about the vacuum lines or anything. Just swap in and good to go? I may just look for some used gears and locker and find someone here in western NC to hook me up with the install.

Yep just plug the lines running to it and do away with the old, out with the new. The vacuum disco is very unreliable

Awesome thanks for the heads up man.

you should be able to look him up from there

No response about the gears. But I suppose if I don't come across something built in the near future.. I'll just put some 4.10 gears and a locker in and rebuild the 98 HP.

just some info bud, you can keep the disco and have a free locker by welding the spiders if you're trying to save some funds, run full vacuum lines to the disco to eliminate factory engagenment setup that sucks and causes all the problems that everyone refers to and bam, done. the 91+ non disco yes do have bigger joints but honestly they are not what everyone hypes them up to be as far as "that much stronger"...i've wheeled the Disco D30 more than the non disco cause you can weld them and still turn on pavement and with new HD joints, it holds up just as good as the newer ones i've ran...if someone is beating on a D30 hard enough to brake a new HD smaller joint, the newer 760 joints wouldn't help much but just my 2cents from wheeling these things for over a decade in stock form. good luck in you build though!!!
as far as rear, find you a 99-01 8.25 29spline stronger xj rear diff and run that. its plenty strong for what you are mentioning using the jeep for...they are practically the strength of a 44 for the most part. again, just my opinion and experience.

Huh I never thought of that. I didn't think to weld anything because I was trying to drive across country in the little guy. Obviously in a perfect world I'd run an Arb or some other selectable locker, but don't feel like dumping that kind of money into a 30 or my somewhat cheap Cherokee. I'd consider a rubicon 44 from a TJ even though it's pretty much like a low pinion 30. It'd be nice to just throw in there. But you can never find them and if you do people want stupid money for them.
