xj build up advice

I have a brand new set of Iroks that galloways donated to southern raffle. I bought them from the winner and can trade them for about anything. I have wheeled Callalante w/ 36 iroks one time. It did ok, but i bet 34 or 35 would be easier on it. I just wished they would make a smaller IROK!!

PM me a price on the rocks!...............and go start on the interior cage!:bounce:

I can get full trade value at Galloways, so I couldnt give any deals. Retail price for the Iroks is what i would have to get.+tax. I better just trade them in.

So I traded the 36 13.50 16s in on some 36 13.50 15s.
I was all set to trade down to a smaller size,BUT... Then i wouldnt have IROKS anymore! Theres just something about IROKS. IMO they are the best offroad tire for my type of wheeling. (east coast offerings)

As far as the cage, back halfing, and any other neat ideas , more opinions are appreciated. Pictures needed also!
Thanks, Dylan

Thanks for the pics.,ghost. I will have to gut it to install cage.Just not looking foward to it.

Hey Dylan! If yer gonna gut it, and knock all the glass out, Get the cage dimensioned, bent up, tacked together on the garage floor, then cut the roof off, install the cage, then weld the roof back on!!

Used to build street stocks this way long time ago. Easier than it sounds!!

When I do a cage on mine it will be interior as I just don't like exo's but that is my opinion, also I would keep the rear of my roof.

I also saw a thread that showed the builders cutting holes in the floor. They then lowered the cege parts down thru the holes and were able to get full circle welds. They then tied into the unibody, via the holes in floor. You pros probably knew this already, but its new and cool to me.

If you want to see a buch of differnt xj in different build levels come to the crawl in Tellico next week. There will be people there with xj's on 31's on up. Even if you can only come for friday evening and the dinner and raffel on saturday come on out and get some ideas.

If you want a really tight fitting cage I think it's the only way to go....

Yep, thats a real common way to fit a cage nicely...

I've done it this way, without removing the headliner on some pro street cars I've done

...especially if dont wanna cut the roof off!

LOL!

Speaking of removing the top, Has anyone done or seen this done to a 4 door xj?
I would want the on/off capability. I know it would be some what crude, but it could be done kinda cheaply with use of plexi glass................right?

It would be easier to build a good cage with the roof off.

Kinda like a snap top?

Im sure you could do it and if done right, it would look fine. Cut it clean at the top of the windshield and along the beltline, cap the tub and cap the ends of the roof and posts, and devise a way to fasten it back on. It could even be made weatherproof!

I've seen this done on pickups, back before there were kits for it

Here is a pic of the wifes rig. '99 XJ full interior cage, back cut.

I used a duster on the back to keep most of the elements out and can still use the AC.
Here are a couple more pics

I like the looks of that "cut back" more and more every time i see one. Who knows, maybe I will thrash mine and go that rout. i should probably sell the good rear hatch first, then thrash it!

Thanks for the pics, looks cool!

I notice the jacked up hood mod, does that help much with cooling? Greg told me about that mod, but I have not done it yet.

Yea...me too! My son in law wants to do that to his!

BTW...Quote? Actually wouldnt be that expensive to do fo yourself. That little bit of steel you would need is cheap! But lots o work!

Wouldnt want to pay someone labor hours for a job like that!
