XJ gearing ?

you should go as deep as you can, you'll prob want to go up in tire size later down the road. since it an xj i hope you aint regearing the d35.

usually with 33's people go with 4.10.

Well right now I'm at about 10" of lift with 37" boggers w/ 4.88s. I have a plan to rebuild my little red xj into a "red rock it". I plan on dropping to about 5" of lift and putting 33s on it. The jeep has a 44 under the rear. A 6000 mile new AW4. I've been eyeballin the 505 5.0 stroker kit. I drive it just about everyday but it mostly to take my son to different doctors and therpists. I want to beable to get him there quick.

Id say youll be fine with 4.88s. If you drive mostly 55-60mph Id say youll be fine. If you do some hwy speeds youll be fine as long as you arent trying to go 80 for long periods of time.

Axles?

What Axles do you have? If you are running a stock HP or LP 30 I would stay away from 4.88s. Also assuming you have a stock Transfer case with 272 low range. If you are going 33's and think you might move up to 35+ at some time, with that setup I would go 4:56, assuming you aren't going to do to much road driving.

I don't do a lot of highway driving and most of the places chralie goes are in salisbury but a few are in concord. The axles that are under it now are a hp30 w/4.88s and open the rear is a xj44 w/4.88s and a spool. Right now the rpms at 60 is just under 2000. The tranfer case isn't stock but its still a 231 and I think low range is stupid low even with 37s. I had it on 35s at one point with the 4.88s and was great. I just wanted bigger but now I kinda need it more streetable. Streetable as in get the kids in and out of and something the wife is not absolutely afraid to drive. I'm looking at getting another car in the near future to drive. I was just really wondering what others has their stuff geared versus tire size

i had 456s with 36's gas mileage sucked but great in the woods. i personally think 488s is to low for 33's being on something you will drive everyday. i would look at 410s

3.55 is a little low for street or trail, but thats what I have.. with 33's. It will go, but isnt as quick as with 31's at getting up there in speed... 4.10 is probably best

What kind of RPMs is everybody running........ lets say at 60.

I think 4.10s would be to high for an auto xj on 33s. As far gas mileage goes I got around 16-17 on 35s and 4.88s. The boggers weigh a ton and my MPGs have dropped to around 10-12. The thing is I really don't drive it every day but at the moment it's the only thing I got.

let me know when your ready to "part out" the old setup.

Hopefully it's going to happen with in the next couple of weeks. What you wanting. Scott and I are trading coils. I'll have some spacers and blocks, t-case drop, the high steer is coming off and maybe the drop brackets. Just call or text me if want anything.

It's not a Cherokee, but I'm running 4.88s and 33s right now. (5 speed TJ) It is a little low on the street around 2500 rpms at 60mph, but its liveable. Of course, I drive pretty slow in the Jeep anyway.

Well that's what I wanting to hear. When I get the motor built that's about the RPMs I'm looking for cruising.

prob spacers and blocks.

4.56s on 34s. Bought an axle with the gears already in it so I only had to regear one axle. If I had to regear both I'd have gone with 4.88s.

Imho opinion 4.10s would be good for 31s but 4.56 is ideal for 33s. 4.88s are gonna get your cruising rpms up to mid 2000s... To me this is ideal Jeep wont have to downshift and upshift and back and forth to climb hills or even speed up at those speeds if need be. I really think you will be fine.

That's what I've kinda been thinking, the transmission won't have to work as hard.

Not to hijack, but I have 3.55. in OD, its like 1500-1750 @ 55-60mph... if I put it in 3rd it goes to like 2000rpm.. running in 3rd w/ lockup would be easier on gas then?

That's how I drive mine... don't know that its better. Just seems easier on it to me.

I'll find out.. I'm getting 16.9 mpg in OD, I'll find out on next fill up since I'll run 3rd instead.. To me if stock rev @ 55 mph is around 2000 rpm, then running in 3rd should be better for mileage (higher rev's, but less fuel needed to keep it turning?). we shall see..
