Xj with 6.5" lift on 35-14.50s. i have 355's now,need some suggestions.wanna good gear for the trail but i still have to drive it on the road to get there so ur info would be greatly appreciated.
 
4.10's wont be that much better than what you already have. If you want to keep your rpm's and fuel mileage somewhat close to stock you'll be looking at 4.56 or 4.88's for those size tires.
 
let me give you a good example of the stress it puts on the engine and tranny..... i drove my yj for 2 years with 32's and a 3.07 gear ratio... im now on my 3rd ax15 tranny... thats with mostly highway driving and occasional off roading... same clutch thank goodness
 
4.10's will just leave you wanting higher gears......save the money and go with the 4.88's....hell, if you are gonna swap axles ever...save the money and just wait till you can go 5.13, that's the only reason i haven't got 4.88's in mine right now

It is a lot of strain on the transmission. I have an AW4 also and drove it around with 3.55s for a while. Burned it up. The tranny guy wanted to know how I was still driving it.

The 8.8 is a good axle and don't think they have a carrier break.

X2. But I do have 4.88s.
 
Invest in a good trans temp gauge and trans cooler, to keep a eye on how hot your transmission gets. AW4s don't like heat, their temp range is kinda low compared to other autos.

<cough> I'm on 38s with my 4.56s. Ran the last ECORS race on em too. :) They work just fine for me. I've never had the jeep above 55 on the 38s though so I can't speak to the "highwayability" of them on 38s.
 
I am in the same boat as you. I have a 97 XJ and everyone is saying to go with 4.88 gear ratio. . . Good Luck
 
Me and my buddy did 373's in his xj on 33's and it does great.would that not be close to the same as 410's with 35's? thanks for all the input guys

actually the recomend 4.10s for 33s and 4.56s for 35s......i have 4.88s on my tj and running 35x14.50 boggers and i LOVE IT
 
i've never seen a single person recommend 4.56's OVER 4.88's in the past year or so....before that, with an 8.25 rear end that was your only option....but with 4.88's for the d30 and the 8.25 now...it's the ONLY way to go for anything over 33's.
 
with 35's and an auto, 4.88's are going to put you the closest to the factory ratio as is possible. I'd go with 4.88's. You never hear anyone saying they wish they would have geared less. You always here people saying they wish they would've gone with more
 
I believe your auto is the AW4 which has a .75 4th gear, my NV3550 has a .78 5th gear I have 35's with 4.88's and at 70 I am running about 2700 RPM. This makes it really rev on the highway. I do a lot of highway driving with mine so I wish I would have went with 4.56's since my 1st gear is 4.01 which gives me a lower crawl ratio then the auto.

However your 1st gear is only 2.80 so the 4.88's would be a lot nicer in the lower gears, so if you are not going to be doing a lot of highway driving the 4.88's would be a good option for you even with 33's.
