got the fiance a 87 xj for xmas, put a 2 in lift and 31x11's on it with some plasma trimmin and exhaust. the problem SHE is running into is that the heat doesnt blow very hot at all. What can we do to combat this and get a little warmer heat out of it? coolant flush? heater core? i dont really care as i usually dont have heat in vehicles, or at least good heat, but i would like to get it fixed for her

Check the heater control valve and make sure it's functioning. You can turn the valve on manually if it's not engaging to see if that gives you more heat. You shouldn't have a problem getting heat out of a 4.0! hehehe My heat runs me out of the XJ.

is the engine reaching operating temperature? might try flushing the system - my sister had a newer taurus wagon that had contamination issues in the cooling system (and a flush fixed the issue)

Problem could be one of several reasons. The heater control valve under the hood, it's vacuum actuated. If there is vacuum loss then it won't open up and allow fluid flow through the heater core. Or it may just be a bad valve. Could be the water pump is weak. Could be the heater core. If the heater core is stopped up, it won't allow the fluid to flow free enough to build up heat.

not to hijack this thread, but is there a way to get heat from the engine to come through the vents? The PO of my jeep had the heater core bypassed.

No, to get heat, the coolant has to flow through the heater core. The vent/defrost/heat is just how the air from the heater core fan is directed. All of the controls are vacuum actuated.

I had zero heat out of my vents on my wrangler and last spring I had to replace the radiator cause it was clogged up and I knew my heater core was most likely clogged also. I lived with it til about 3 weeks ago and I spent the $70 bucks and about 3 hours of swapping the heater cores and now it almost gets too hot, but that in a wrangler. Its probably a whole day job in a XJ. also to replace it you have to unhook your a/c lines and if you want that back in the summer, plan on having an a/c job done on it. Check the color of the coolant in the radiator, you may find the system is clogged up (if not nice and green), and when you get on to warmer day this spring it will over heat at highway speeds as mine did. You can try a flush or maybe back flush but I just replaced everything. my 2 cents, if its not running around 210 on the gauge (if your instrument cluster has one) you may have a stuck open t-stat. Temp fix you can try putting cardboard in front of the radiator so the coolant dosen't get cooled off as well, just do some trial and error, to much coverage and it may over heat.
