I found this kit from Essentially Offroad and was wondering what everyones opinion on it is and if anyone had done business with them in the past. I'll be using it for crawling, no Jeepspeed for me. It may be a little overkill but for the price, $610, it doesn't seem bad deal at all. All the engineering is done and I like the fact that it has lots of options to add my own mounts and brackets for additional items. For any of you more expierenced cage builders, do you see any weak points? Anywhere you would add some more triangulation? I'll be installing it myself so modifications can be done along the way. Also FWIW it will be tied into a front exo, beefed up rockers and rear bumper/shackle mounts. I don't have a bender but I'm sure I could find one to use but my bending experience is farily limited so I like the fact that it is weld in and go. No making mistakes and wasting alot of tube.

same kit thats in mine. When chris installed it i think he said it still required some tweaking. On my opinion i think its a nice and good cage. There are are only three things that get on my nerves

* the bars on the side rear kill any plans of making it a 3-4 seater unles you mod them
* the rear bar kills the ability to sit in the bacl of the jeep to watch stuff
* theres one bar that is right above my head as a driver that gets in my way and is a little unsafe for me as (6'3) if i would have built the cage i could have solved these problems but for a kit that comes to your door its a well put together design. Id say its a good price and good work if you dont have much experiance with bending yet.

also wish the guy who welded mine could have welded a litlle better haha its fugly in spots.

I'm building mine as a two seater so that's not an issue for me.

I wheel, not sit and watch. :flipoff2:

I'm only 5'11" so the head bar shouldn't be a problem.

So far this cage sounds and looks like it will fit my needs well.
You got any pics of your cage installed? Their website has some pretty small pics.

Anyone else have any input?

I'm 5'10" and it still got in my way sometimes.... However w/ a XJ you really dont have any headroom to begin with. I also removed the headliner/padding and installed it to where it has to be "coaxed" into position w/ a dead blow to retain as much head room as possible.... I mean it's flush w/ the roof.

It's a .120 wall DOM cage that's pre bent and easily modified... You can really do a lot off of it I believe.

Go out and buy some good whole saws and a notcher (or borrow one) b/c you'll need it... nothing fits perfect ever and this is no exception and it did require some shortening , re-notching, etc.

There are NO and I mean NO Instructions or Pictures circulating that I can find anywhere online besides my own.. I'll post them here and if you dont need them let me know and i'll remove the links.

I'd buy it again... but now that we have a JD2 i'd just build my own.... however this cage would save a lot of time and would serve the purpose atleast IMO...

If I did it again.. I'd lower the rear sholder harness cross bar down about 6" or so for shorter passengers... and you really dont need the rear most cross bar.. (I used it to mount my tank, etc. though)
Chris

You could prob. push the B pillar forward some so you can use the back seat. re-work the tubes that interfere with getting in the door and you should be good.

i wonder will it clear the ears ?????

should the mounts for the shoulder belts be pointed directly in-line w/ the direction of the pull on the belts? That way you aren't putting a side load on that tab, and you would be pulling completely in tension?

that was a serious question, I really don't know, I just saw it and it looks odd the way it is.

Yeah probably but it interfered w/ the seat so I mounted it like that.. I dont think it's going anywhere the mounting brackets were 1/4" and the bolts were 1/2" G8... I seriously doubt your body even in a violent roll would break either the tab or bolt off.

For the shoulder harness, the race guys say they should not be mounted more than 15 degrees of horizontal. Plus you would have a lot more to worry about than the tabs if you were actually able to break one off.
