XJ loud engine

why does my XJ sound like its got a turbine behind the grill? its not all the time, but when it is roaring, it sounds like the fan is about to explode, significantly louder than my engine or exhaust

I can't remember if the XJ has an crank driven fan, or both are electric. Typically what you are descrbing is a bad fan clutch that is locked on.
