So, my wifes 2000 xj ( coil pack motor) started knockin so im goin to put a motor in it. Ive searched all morning and aint really found a straight answer on which 4.0 motors would be compatible. If I find an older dizzy cap and plug motor, ill have to swap computers also correct? wj and zj motors have different motor mounts correct? 99 an older jeep 4.0 motors are plentiful but im havin a really hard time finding a newer one. I could just get it rebuilt but the rods and mains are already 20/10, so ill have to get a new crank also. I plan to buy a used motor, and rebuild the old one myself and take my time as I aint never been through a complete motor before. ANy info is greatly appreciated.

Only direct bolt in as of I know is a 00-01 cherokee 4.0. I went through the same with my wifes. If you find one be prepared to pay big money compared to the older models. I have heard of people replacing it with a older model but it was tough.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to use a motor from the same year or newer by law.

In your case on an XJ, use older engine, but use your cylinder head (or one from a 2000 and up). You'll need a head with bosses cast onto it for the coil bolts to attach to.
I have done this exact swap a few times.

Thanks Jody I didn't consider that. Maybe I could find an older one like u said and rebuild the head n mine ill look into that.
Gotwood... ive never heard that before May be true but im not really worried about that to much
