just got a 88 cherokee with auto trans and a 231amc transfer case. is there any way to know spline count without pulling apart? also..it is going to need all 4 doors eventually. what years of xj will work?
any info would help. thanks
 
88 should be a 21-spline t-case, not the later 23-spline.
I'm pretty sure the 4 doors are interchangeable from 84-96, the next gen body 97-01 doors have different strikers and hinges.
The rear hatch hinges/body holes changed in 91 I think. Striker should be the same for all 1st gen 84-96.
 
thanks what year did the 23 spline auto tranny show up? would a later model tranny bolt in to a 88 and plug in? reason i ask is i have a 4to1 23 spline 231 and would like to use it.
 
I'm thinking '90 when they went to the HO 4.0, but I am not certain.
 
21 Spline Short Input - AW4(pre 1990), AX4, AX5
21 Spline Long Input - Peugeot BA 10/5
23 Spline Short Input - AX15(pre 1995,AW4(post 1990)
23 Spline Long Input - AX15(post 1994),TF904,TF999,Peugeot BA 10/5
 
If I am not mistaken, you can pull the 23 spine case apart, as well as the 21 spline case, and swap out the planetary gears. I am pretty sure the moon gears are the same. It takes a beefy set of snap ring pliers to do this.
I went through this when I was swapping crawl boxes when I would bust the case on one.

I semm to recall but not 100% sure, you shouldn't need to mess with the snap rings.. I know you can swap the input.. I had to go from 21 -> 23 in the past. All 91's I owned were 23 spline, all 90's I've seen were 21. If its got the HO sticker on the back, unless someone changed the trans, its a 23 spline.

91 was first year for 23 spline. Later model trans will bolt and plug in, at least up to '95, Maybe later models too, just not sure if they changed the connector (the wiring and trans internal electronics remained the same AFAIK). Swapping the output shaft on the trans is a complete teardown. You won't be able to swap the inputs on the TC's as discussed above, because the 4-1 is part of the input. Easiest way is to swap the trans like you say. FWIW, I have a 88 AW4 trans hooked to a '93 harness.
