Just picked up a 98 xj and it seems that the obd won't reset. I've tried to clear the p122 and p700 codes a couple times, and when I do then retread they still show. I changed the tps but the battery was dead so I didn't have a chance to try to drive it.

I'm guessing the codes are setting instantly, keeping the light on or the scan tool isn't functioning correctly. Are the issues repaired?

Not sure yet. Battery is dead and I have no tags on it yet so I haven't driven it yet. In fact, I've only driven the thing a total of 30' !

After a little charge time the cel reset for 2 seconds then back on. I changed the tps with no improvement. I'm hoping this problem is what is causing my trans problems too. It will not down shift into passing gear at any speed, just shifts (kinda hard shifts) up to cruising speed but no down unless you stop.

My next step will be a step back. I'm going to change the fluids, plugs/wires/dizzy cap and button and just a good tune up to see if that makes a big difference.

Did you check tps power and ground? Verify the signal was smooth with depression of the throttle? Did you find the actual transmission code? No reason to replace a bunch of parts.

Not yet. I pulled a good tps off of another jeep. I've done some reading and the clocking ring in the steering wheel can affect voltage, and I already know the ring has problems. Going to mess with this next.

Problem solved! The wire harness was resting/rubbing across the back of the fuel rail. Zip tied the loom up and problem immediately went away!

Oh the powers of google-foo.

That's great, didn't even have to buy any sensors ! I am gonna check for that on my WJ . It acts funny sometimes, but not all the time! Hope it does great for ya!

I'm loving not driving the truck all over town for sure! I sold my last xj when I got the truck and have needed another ever since.

I just wish people could have been there to see poor @Dylan W. and the trick we pulled on him. I think he was about to cry, and I know for sure he would have thrown in his wife and kids to get that tj off my trailer!

Thanks, and BUMP for a good seller @rckrubicon

Let me know if you find the book for the starter, or even the brand name and i could look it up.
