I have a 98 xj, that over heats. It only overheats when its hot as hell outside, and occasionally when the air is on. Any ideas? Tried the thermostat.
Thanks in advance

re: overheating

I had a pin hole leak in my XJ radiator. Overheated on a trip up to hanging rock.
New radiator is pretty cheap. Under $100. Easy swap too.
I'm not a mechanic by any sort of training. Took about an hour and a half.
No more over heating.
Could also be the water pump.

flush the radiator first.

I will have to put some dye in it and see if its leaking, but i dont think thats the case....The fan is kicking on, but im thinking that it may get locked up somtimes because it will jump to 260 degress and then three minutes later be back at normal temperature. Ill flush the radiator today!

ive had several probs with my 92. changed the thermostat, (went with a lower temp one) water pump and it still overheated. got 45mins from home one day and the rad split about 6in on the top. come to find out it was aftermarket plastic :poop:. went to pull a part got a used one $30 and been fine since. a new one from auto store will run you about $150-$200. good luck.
ps. it doesnt help that its 100 degrees out

Thanks for all the help, im gonna check the radiator first. And yeah, During the day when its around 103, it overheats quick. Never had a problem at night.

i put 2 12" fans on the front of the rad. along with the ones on the back and the temp dropped about 20 degrees

The water pumps have a bad problem with going out. The properlers go to hell on them that might explain the sudden spike then drop in temp.

I tried several differnt things. Started with a flush and coolant swap, then elect fan, finally popped a head gasket. So while I had it apart I replaced the pump and radiator and thermastat. So far so good........
