xj rear hatch help

98 xj and cant get the raer hatch to realease. Ive read its a rod out of adjustment. how do i get this thing up to get in there
 
All of mine been stuck also. Usually if you hit it on the side of the latch at the same time your trying to open it, it will open. Or stick the key in and leave it in the unlock position and keep pulling the latch. Then you get fix the rod issue from there.

push in on plate area above lever while pulling...this has worked for me
there is a plastic piece that getts worn and or broken in the handle iv replaced several
