i have a 97 jeep xj with lift and tires. i was rear ended yesterday by a lifted tj and it took out the back pass side of my car. I need a new tail gate, tail light, and need some way to fix the quarter pannel. the dent in the quarter pannel goes up about to where the fender starts and to the seam below the window. this will need to be cut out or bondoed.
here is my thought:
i have seen jeeps who have diamond plate or sheet metal put in place of rear quarter pannels for rock protection. basically i am looking for advice/ pictures of someone who has done this mod to an xj. or even another type of vehicle so i can decide if it is even going to come out cheaper than just pulling it back and bondoing it as best they can and where to stop the diamond plating on the side of the car.
-any help or advice is welcomed and appreciated

If you were not at fault I would just have a body shop fix it correctly and be done with it.

well the jeep is not worth much book value anyway so it will be considered totaled and money in my pocket wont be a bad thing as i will be going to college next year so the more money i can keep in my pocket and keep my jeep the better. i was thinking this could be a cheaper way to fix my jeep as well as add another mod to it that does not make it look stupid.

If you were not at fault and the other vehicle's insurance company wants to total it, make a deal to buy it from them(usually around $500.00 of of the payout), then re-sheet it like userbmx said in the link he posted. This way, you will have extra money for the repair and maybe some more in your pocket.

thanks

thanks a bunch for the advice and that link guys i think im gonna try and do the same thing done in that link. and can anyone look at these pictures and make a pretty good guess on rather my jeep is or is not going to be set as totaled?

cherokee

well judging how the insurance is looking and pricing everything to fix it my way it will not be worth it to fix. but if anyone would like to buy it, if it is listed totaled let me know. i can get it back for between 500 and 700 dollars off of the insurance check. if anyone is wanting to offer me something for the jeep as it is/ will be then shoot me a pm. am looking to get around 1800 as is with 4.5 rubicon express and 32 bfg ats. i can also put back stock and then will sell as is for about 1000. shoot me a pm if interested

i am gettin it pulled out with a frame bender but there will still be a dent. i am going to begin to attempt the same thing that the guy did on the other forum as soon as i get the dent pulled. the guy used 10 ga metal on his. is this a pretty sturdy thickness considering that there might be a hallow spot behind it. should i stay with 10ga or go thicker or thinner, i still need to work it a bit because there is some conture to the body. i will try to run a forum on it incase someone else wants to attempt it, thank you all for your help. anymore advice will definatly help. aaron snider

well i was going to go to a body shop to bend the quarter pannel out but i figured i could not break it much more. well i got my come along out and got an i bolt and took out all my interior plastics. put bolt through a two by 4 on the inside of the quarter pannel follwed by a large washer and a nut. well after about 45 inutes of making new holes and moving the i bolt around i got this.

tail light also came in today so i put it on and it lines up perfectly after my pulling. any ideas on the rest. it is plat enough to put metal over it. i am gonna work at it for an hour or so tommorow and if i can fix it a little more im gonna just weld the holes up and paint over it. anyone who has input to make this go easier i am willing to take it. also if someone has a tailgait i will buy it... prefer blue but for the right price ill take about any color.
redneck fixes are deffinatly the way to go

Buddy has a blue rear hatch, its off an 89, and has a crack in the lower left side, he could paint to match probably... has no rear window. Let me know if your interested, Ill ask him for a price later today.
I have a hatch, no window, been laying in the woods for atleast 6 months, give it to ya for free if ya wanna pick it up... not sure of its condition but was straight when we took it off.

both hatches are from older models, thinking about it not even sure if they would fit, never owned a new model xj :)

google Stewart's salvage in Statesville NC. he got a number of 97+ Xj's in from the cash for clunkers program. I know he has several tail gates. Normally has pretty good prices too

just about done

i spent about two more hours with the come along and used a tree with a 2x8 to keep the taillight area from coming out with it. on tailgait i wrapped tail gate with tow strap through the doors and just hooked comealong on the edge and did not do too bad

Best picture I could find, that the kind of design your going for?

Planning to cover the damage on the tailgate also or no?
with the added weight it may be too heavy for the tailgate shocks to hold it up.

fixed

never really updated this but i have since finshed the fixing and would sugest this as a solution to anyone with similar issues. i got diamond plate for the metal overlays and got it cut to match up. i truck bed lines them and then painted them green and then used rivets to attach. so in all i spent 35 bucks for a tail light, about 15 on spray paints, primers and truckbed liner, 25 on a comealong and about 5 to 6 hours of work. this is what i got
