Hey guys, '95 Cherokee Sport, AW4, 4wd, 222k on the clock.

I've noticed the last couple of months I seem to hear a popping or slip noise coming from right underneath me. Even from a redlight, when I let off the brakes to apply the gas, I can hear it slip, sounds like from the yoke. Thats the only driveshaft play I have (rear driveshaft that is), is front to back. My leafs are sagged pretty bad, working on fixing that issue, installed a new trans mount back in July or October of 2012. What is causing this yoke slip, is it my leafs throwing the driveline angle off? :/ it really sounds like its a "sliding forward and backward" then a thunk once it settles in either direction. Checked u-joints, but like I said this is front to back play slipping on the yoke.

No, has no front driveshaft in it currently. I'm 95% sure its from the tailshaft of the transmission going to the driveshaft. I can move it back and forth, I'm just not sure what that exactly means. At first I thought maybe the output shaft bearing, but I think if that was worn it wouldn't have play back and forth, it would be up down/side to side. Any ideas on this? I hope my trans isn't on the way out, or I'm gonna be in some trouble. :/ I'm working on getting new leafs and getting all that solved, I know they are sagged to the point the driveline angle is NOT okay, but my thoughts are also that once I fix this it may be to the point the slipping noise will persist even after fixing the leafs. I'm just not sure what causes back and forth play with the tailshaft/driveshaft. Thanks for your insight transman. I'm really trying to hunt this down and solve it before its too late!

maybe the snap ring on the output shaft that holds the bearing in place. if the shaft moves in and out, the bearing is held in the case by an external snap ring, the shaft is possibly moving in and out and slipping out of the planetary splines.

Good point. Should I just go ahead and buy a new bearing/seal/snap ring ahead of time and replace it anyway? I guess if I get that far I may as well go ahead and throw new u joints in too. I really hope our idea is correct and its nothing worse. Thanks again for the insight man.
