I've pulled quite a few 231s from XJs, but can never get the upper drivers side nut (the one on the top of the AW4 bracket) from under the vehicle. I always end up pulling the tranny shifter and getting it from above. I'm sure people have done this from below...what secret combination of tools and cussing is required?

I just pulled the 242 from my xj a few weeks ago. I used a series of extenions and an 3/8's impact. Still a pain, but better than an 1/8 turn at a time. Good Luck.

I tried yesterday, managed to get a stubby wrench on there, then jacked the tranny up thinking when it hit the body, it might break the nut loose...just dented the body. I then lowered it back and hooked the closed end of an 1-1/4 wrench to my stubby wrench, similar to the rope method, but I couldnt make it happen. This rig has no carpet center console, it was to easier to do it from above (3/8" ratchet and 3-4" extension). Thanks for the tips, I'm looking at doing my DD with carpet and center console in the near future.

Were you standing/laying on the drivers side or passenger side? I assume the wobbler socket was used too.

Yes, wobble extenions from Snappy. It was on the lift and I had the trans and t-case lowered as far as possible. So I was on both sides at any given time.

Cant remember the last one I did but it was either a flex head ratchet wrench or 3/8 wobbly extensions hooked to my air rachet.

I just pulled my 242 as well. I used a ratchet and one extension. It worked fine. Just don't get in a hurry. I dropped the case in about 2 hours. I just took my time so I would not tear things up. Jeep didn't make this easy.

I have an ax-15 and I had to pull back carpet and use the access panel. TBH after wrestling underneath for forever I made up my mind if I do it again I'll just plan on that route from the beginning. It sucks but it beats a wasted hour trying another futile work around.

Lol I lost half a day messing with various options and still pulling carpet. I may be wrong but I've heard more success stories from underneath with an aw4 but that could just be the ratios of manual and auto.
