Alright np231 its having issues shifting back into 2wd from 4wd... I feel strongly that it's has nothing to do with the linakge... You can put ALOT of force on the shifter and it still won't go in to 2wd.... It will change from 4H-4L just fine.. And if you get under the jeep you can take a hammer and (pop) it in 2wd with some force and everything is fine... And shifting from 2wd to 4wd is butter....... Any insight????

It also popped out of 4L one day wheeling a few months ago but hasn't done it again..

To completely rule out the linkage, block the wheels so it can't roll fwd or rev. unhook the linkage from the transfer case & try to shift by hand or with a pair of channel locks.

If it still wont shift, there is an internal issue & it's got to be removed to fix.

The stupidest little things can cause those shifters to bind up. Make sure all the little bushings are in and good shape. There should be one on the body and one in the bracket attached to the tcase. Any amount of bind = pain in the balls. Next step could be numerous things: a bent shift rail, the detent ball sticking, there are little nylon "shoes" that go on the shift rails... xyz....

Ive had nothing but problems out of the factory bell crank shifter. For me the little nylon bushing on the transmission would brake and the whole crank would come loose. I built a shifter out of some 3/8 female heims and some threaded rod. I also had to cut and weld the shift lever on the transfer case.

I highly recomend one of these kits. Its basicly what I did without all the trail and error I went through.
