While driving, it seems the tranny can't decide what gear it wants to be in. It violently shifts from bogged down in 2nd to reving to almost 4000rpms. It almost seems like an electrical issue. The engine would die then it would barely start again. I'm not sure it will even make it to work tomorrow... Someone help!

For a long time the torque converter would lock up right after shifting into OD, yesterday while driving it was acting up a little bit, I would let off the gas a little bit and the converter would unlock, causing the rpms to rise about 3 or 400 rpms. Now its just jacked up, it cant make up its mind what gear it wants to be in, but what I dont get is how the engine would die at the same time and then take forever to start again... I just got my rig together and want to wheel it...

what year XJ? Try unplugging the TCU (behind the pass. side knee panel, below glove box). The TCU controls shifts, so you'll have to shift manually.
There's the TV cable that goes to the TB, it controls shift pressure, maybe that's not connected or adjusted properly...

Mine 93 was fine till i went mudding. after reseach i found could be tps. replace in autozone parking lot fixed idle and shifting problems. takes atorx peferable on a ratchet to get it off
