xj trans shift problems

wifes xj is a 97 sport but its had a motor/tranny swap at some point she said before she bought it. its not the same year 4.0. anyways its an a/t and it only shifts into o/d when it wants to. any body know what it could be? i dont know shit about trannys lol
 
So it shifts.....automatically?


Hahah just kidding.

But if it feels like it is shifting slowly you can adjust the cable on the drivers side of the transmission
 
no sometimes it shifts and sometimes it doesnt ?
 
have you checked to see if there is a stored "check engine" code? my 99 does it soe times. it could be the NSS switch going bad. they can be cleaned, sometimes that fixes them/ sometimes not. ive cleaned mine twice with no luck. going to change it with my trail rig
