XJ transfer case issue.

I bought a '96 Jeep Cherokee sport a week ago for cheap. It's already lifted, welded rear and locked up front etc etc....the transfer case grinds really bad in 4hi position and you can put it the transmission in gear and the Jeep will not move. This is at a dead stop with the transmission in neutral. I have not tried putting it in 4hi while moving and a few people have said that may help a lot I just haven't had the chance to do it. It will go into 4lo just fine and pulls great in 4lo. What could be the issue with it? I'm not too worried because if I need 4x4 I never go for 4hi any way I just put it in low range. Is the transfer case busted or could it be something simple? If I ran it as is and just used 4lo would everything be okay?

I would first make sure the linkage is adjusted correctly. Sounds like it is not engaging all the way.

could be a broken mode range fork. 2hi does not work either? I have seen one side of the fork break, leaving hi range gear not engaged/grinding, but the low range side intact, permitting lo operation. (PM me if you tear the case down and discover a broken fork.. I have one laying in the shop, complete with shift rail, as well as all the mainshaft guts excluding low range hub & chain, which is fine on yours since 4lo is ok)
