I have a 1998 XJ with 221k. The trusty 4.0 runs like a champ. I just came back frmo a deployment and my transmission/transfer case started making metal on metal noise. I don't know how else to describe it. Anyhow this is my daily driver. until recently i have been stock height and running 225/70/15 street tires. I just bought a 3" budget and 31's but i haven't installed anything yet. I am concerned with this issue first and foremost. I'm afraid that I'll be forking out money on trans or transfer case soon. I am getting some codes from the check engine light. I'll have to recheck them to give a more definite report but i do know that at least on of the codes is about the torque converter having a malfunction. I crawled under the jeep and it makes the noise in every gear including neutral and park and it makes the noise regardless of which gear the transfer case is in. If I need to supply more info please ask specific questions so that I can supply the appropriate information. I appreciate any help that can be offered.
