Hey guys

I'll start with I'm a super noon with jeeps. I'm a Toyota guy, my sister has a 1997 xj and is in need of tires. She wants to put a set of black steel wheels. I need to know what width and backspacing to look for. Right now its stock suspension on 235/75/15s and she will be getting a set of cooper at3s in that size for now. If she ever did a budget boost and 31 10.50s I'd like to run the same wheels.

So what backspacing and width will work for 235s and 31s? We don't like wheels and tires hanging out of the body line so I'm guessing 7 inch wide but I'm not sure since this is the first jeep I've wrenched on.
Thanks guys!

15x8 or 15x7 will work. Anything with less than 4.5" of backspacing will do you good. Stock back spacing. I have a 10.5" wide tire on my stock wheels and they would be inside the fender flares if I had any. May want to look into 16s or 17s too. Seems like the trend for offroad tires are accepting larger wheels. Get ahead while you can. Just my opinion though

I'm running TJ Canyon wheels on my '98 XJ (15"x8"). They have 5.5" backspacing. With 31's the fronts are just outside of the fender flares and the rears are even with the fender flares.
