So Im watching Xtreme right now, and they were talking about how they went through the trouble of making the hemi 50 state legal, blah blah blah...

Then Ian mentioned that they replaced the windshield with that Lexan Speed Glass....which isnt DOT approved, nor legal in some jurisdictions, possibly even a few states

So why bother making the Engine 50 state legal, when they probably wont pass inspection in some states anyways? Seems utterly pointless to me...

Not all states have state inspections like here. A lot of states only care about pollution, not the windshield.

Oh yeah, I knew that. But why bother going through the whole 50 state legal thing on the engine, when they just went and threw it away with putting a windshield in it that isnt 50 state legal?

I mean I suppose it was just to show how you can make a swapped engine 50 state legal...but still..

who cares? It ALOT closer to legal than what I have been driving around for years. :bounce2:

Same here!....That hemi sounded nice though. I'd happily drive that in any state!

I don't know why everyone is getting their panties in a wad over this thing. He only ever said "the engine is 50 state smog legal". Ever seen speedglass? I guarantee no inspector or hp officer would ever know a difference. And considering he can just pull the windshield and be "legal", what does it matter. Technically a lifted jeep here in NC shouldn't pass inspection...

What, you dont think 35 spline 44's is where its at Jim?

Forget about the windshield and uncovered tires. Did ya'll notice he road-tested it on the Interstate without a license plate?

They are in TN, no one cares. And I got my Lexan windshield with a inspection sticker on it the other day, dude just told me not to take a blade to get it off (no shit) Why would lexan be illegal? Its safer than glass. Thats like the people that ask if roll cages and harnesses are road legal :shaking:

bc the windshield is a great place to pull people out of when they wreck and the vehicle is on its lid and the doors wont open. a regular windshield is easy to spiderweb and cut out but lexan not so much. obviously this is a mute point in a soft top vehicle but it must have been easier to just say they are all illegal rather than to say that they are illegal in enclosed cab vehicles and not for soft top's.

Never thought of that b/c mos tpeople with lexan winddhields either have no doors (like mine) or no top/soft top. Thats a good point, that would be hell trying to break that.

It's actually the other way. NHTSA says certain polycarb windshields are legal for anything but verts and no-top vehicles. Has nothing to do with "rescueability". It has to do with the glazing and resistance to scratching and effects from different chemicals/fuels. Speedglass would likely pass all of the applicable fmvss/ansi/nhtsa tests if you were to actually challenge it. Plain lexan, probably not so much. Plexiglass--likely the reason these rules exist--not at all.

I wasnt really complaining about the lexan windshield addition...

It was more along the lines of, why bother with a 50 state legal engine, just to dash all that work with a lexan windshield kinda thing...

maybe im just retarded...

whats a lexan windshield

Lexan is a brand name for polycarbonate. When you drive up to a bank drive through, you are most likely looking through a Lexan Window. In certain thicknesses, it's call bullet proof.
Scratches easier than glass, but doesn't shatter like glass.
