What do you think? I am thinking more shims. This is a coast pattern. The drive side was just a big smear, but that was expected as this is a used gear set.

Supposing more shims (pinion is too far away?), how much? I have no feel for what a big/small change is.

Thats a good pattern. Thats acutally the Ideal pattern.

Small change = .002 or smaller - Use when your pattern is really close, just trying to perfect it.

Medium change = .005 ish -

Big Change = .010 or greater - Use when you're way off.

It just takes time to get a feel for it.

Hmm

Running low on paint. Gonna hit up the dealers tomorrow to see what I can get.

Anybody got the Chevy/Dodge/Ford/DC part number handy for gear marking compound?

EDIT: Found GM part
GM Part #1052351 Compound 08800

The first pattern looks fine. When Im checking the pattern. I will only put marking compound on 3 places for about 3-5 teeth. Putting it all the way around is fine, but not really necessary.

Yep

I am working with a USED gear set (looks slightly burned). I am starting to think I'll never get a pretty pattern out of it (that's what most of the literature says).
Here's try 3. Tempted to take another .005" outta the pinion depth. Dunno though. Might run this one.

Kinda hard to tell, but that looks ok to me.
