.........are grumpy when you wake them up and apparently have very good night vision  ..................found a nest yesturday afternoon in a natural area in the front yard where I spread out the leaves from the lawn. Could'nt pinpoint the beehole in the leaves to employ the shopfan so I waited till they were tucked in their beds and snuck out there about 11pm w a rake and flashlight, quickly scratched the leaves to bare ground where the nest was, and runned off..................returned 10 "safe" mins. later w some hornet spray and was trying to find the hole and watching a bunch of them slowly crawling on the ground from a percieved "safe" distance and then BAM 3 stung the arm holding the flashlight and chased me back in the house. I returned after 15 more minutes after taking some benydrl and w a longsleeve shirt and a bigger, brighter flashlight I shot a half can of Hotshot in the hole...............and got my other flashlight back ................I see a few more buzzin around there and fixin to haul the fan out ....................

First time i've battled them late at night................In hindsite not such a good idea..................no fun going to bed w some fresh bee stings and I was'nt drinking last night, but thought about fixing that w a healthy nightcap while I rolled around in the bed trying to get comfortable to sleep

There sneaky, I got stung three times before I even saw one. I prob would have had a lot of spray instead of the fan for that one and go in guns a blazin'.

1/2 gallon of gas in the hole then use the spray to light the hole with your lighter!!! Then you have little fire works flying out of the hole!!!

I've been in the same situation. Gone out there at 5am, and raked the leaves/debris in a 5ft circle in big hurry, then run back to the house. Come out the next morning at 5am, and the hole is easily visible. Got to have patience.

I got popped by the little SOB's this past weekend too. Needed a little fill dirt for a low spot in my yard so I took my wheel barrow out in the woods and started to dig me up some. Little did I know I decided to dig right where they were. Got me 3 times before I could realize what was going on. Nasty little buggers.

They got me about 20 times several summers ago when I stepped on their nest.

........On closer inspection yesterday the nest was really in the layers of decomposing leaves from years of spreading them over the area and just a small part of it in the ground, so I destroyed and slung the broken pieces of the hive all over the place with the rake in the dark. In daylight I would have seen the nest pieces and them buzzing all around and left them the hell alone for a long while!. The ones I saw crawling on the ground where the nest was were flightless youngsters not sleepy/lethargic adults as I assumed........................I googled and found this
