The wife and I are thinking about going out to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks this fall (late September for peak fall colors). We will be taking our 4 yr old boy with us. He will be almost 5 at the time of the trip. We plan to do a lot of day hiking and sight seeing, but I would love to hear of ideas of things to do and things to see from those who have been there. My boy can hike 3 miles right now, and I'm hoping to have that up a little higher by this coming fall. Also looking for lodging ideas, preferably something on the luxury end of the spectrum for my wife. I spent a week backpacking in the Grand Tetons when I was 16 yrs old, so am excited to return.

Just remember that the minimum elevation of yellowstone is right at one mile -- 5282', and is up from there. For young developing lungs, don't expect him to be able to do there what he can do down here. Old lungs either, for that matter.

May not be a problem, just don't have your expectations too high.

I got an idea, update us back here with lots of pics and details! Lol. I'm sure that's a given, I just really enjoy when people on here take trips like that and share with us.

We goin to jellystone eh booboo?

Short hikes and luxury Accomidations? Can't help you there! Don't think we did anything less than 8-10 miles at a time and we camped the entire time. A lot of stuff in Yellowstone is steps from the vehicle though.

I went with my family this past summer. We stayed in Jackson Hole. Tetons was a short drive away. Yellowstone turned out being a day trip. Absolutely awesome! Take a camelback, drink more water than you think you need to.

Btw, imho and everyone else I know that has been will tell you glacier np blows the other two combined out of the water in several aspects. Probably better off at a later time with the boy but keep it in mind. You have to conscious of grizzly's in Yellowstone, you better be prepared to meet one in glacier. We saw more than we wanted to there.

Was in the same room when this very topic came up this weeked. One experienced photographer said bear spray is a must. Can't fly with it though. When I went in mid June it snowed once and frosted nearly every morning. Elevation didn't bother me at Yellowstone but Monarch Pass in Colorado killed me. Be prepared for it to still be daylight at 10pm.

After some internet searching, the wife is now wanting to go to Glacier National Park. Why do you recommend going there when my boy is older?

Mainly for memories and the length of the better hikes. In 4-5 days there we never did a hike less than 10mi or so. You may have new snow in September. We passed a trail crew that had JUST broke ground through a snow bank in mid August on the way to grinnel glacier. Some of Mels family has been there every yr for more than the last 10yrs. I'd love to take some of my guys there on a wk trip but Mel won't miss another trip there as long as my boots are on. You have my number, don't be skeered to call.
