I may start a full project thread but had an immediate concern that I am hoping the collective can help with. First the story so far...

So my 1995 YJ project has 116k or so, 2.5L and 5 speed. Attempted to drive it home this week and kept losing power (as the exhaust leak got worse...)

Finally pulled over (dropped out of third all of a sudden... went back in later no issue) and pulled over and some IDIOT forgot to take the parking brake off. I just assumed it was 'weak' because it is a 4 banger on 31s. So yeah, I am that guy.. but it really was a part but not the final issues.

Wife mentions it was "smoking" and I could smell brakes, figured that was it, hit the road again and still running like crap, exhaust leak is awful and I am now having issues in getting it into 1st gear at intersection so I give up and pull over. Again I think clutch / transmission are ok, could just be driver paranoia at this point.

PLAN B: Got the trailer, brought it home that way, drove it off the trailer and into the garage.

So here is the current issues:

OIL.. (the smoke), when I open the hood I am finding a patch of wet hot oil on the passenger side of the engine. I am looking all around, and the source appears to be the oil filter area? Valve cover and head gasket are dry, and it is quite possible the last oil change was 2007/2008 on this Jeep! I was running 3000 rpms (crappy exhaust / losing power) and in looking at engine parts diagrams this morning the only "source" of oil on that side of the engine is that oil filter? Could it simply be a dried out ring on the oil filter (or even not tightened down good...) that allowed it to "blow" out oil under pressure as I am driving?

This is my primary concern at this point! Source of the oil... and the fix. I was 'thinking' drain the oil pan, and replace the filter and put in all new oil? (Clean up current oil) Then "see what happens"?

EXHAUST.. so the leak, right before (or after I cannot remember) the CAT, is a section of pipe where the PO has a shiny metal tin foil looking wrap around the pipe holding it together with hose clamps. YEEHAW. That has failed and the two pipes are no longer attached to each other. When I can get up in there I will be looking at this more to see if the exhaust sytem is salvagable or this is a sign of rot and I need to start buying pieces or outsourcing the job and letting them just bend all new pipe.

If it's been that long since an oil change, just change the oil and filter. Clean up the area around the filter while you're doing that, so you can see any new leaks. The leak is probably just from the filter gasket, which has likely compressed over time and the filter is likely loose now. Regardless, it's a cheap and easy thing that you should do anyway before worrying about it.

I posted up in general chit chat area too, would like to see if a local 4x4 has welder and wants to come fix this exhaust? I confirmed it is a simple cut, not sure why they did not splice in or such but basically needs welded or new section of pipe. That and an oil change...
