Ok here it is, i purchased a 92yj with a 4.0 auto in it and added some 33s, tube fenders, and a rear bumper and tire carrier i pickup at rides. Been driving it for a couple months now and i can tell the auto dont like the 33s ,kinda struggles. this is something i want to feel comfortable to drive my family to and from the trails. Id like to go full width for stability. My idea is to go with a hp dana44 in the front and a 9 inch in the rear. My question is what d44 axles should i be looking for for the front , also will i have to run a track bar front and rear to keep the jeep stable on the road at hwy speeds ?

i remember reading in a "jeep" magazine that the f250? leaf front axle was real easy to swap in. the spring perches were like 1/2" diff so the guy moved his shackle mounts. maybe a bent shacket could be better.

If you are set on full width and staying with leaf springs, I would just go with a HPD44/60 set up out of a 78-79 F250. The can be found really reasonable and are a easy swap. I never ran a trac bar with the leafs.

x2 on what 89wrangler said, I'm actually doing that exact swap right now. All i have to do is cut off the perches and re-weld them according to the right width and pinion angle. The things I like about the 78-79 f250 hp44 is the thickness of the axle tubes, it's full width, and it is 8 lug. Mine have 4.10's in them and I know most stock axles are 3.54 or so. you could probably find a set that's got 4.10's though.

well im on the look for axles in the next couple weeks , waiting on some money to come in. gotta a deal or two in the works.

FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THAT THE DIFFERENCE IN SPRING PERCH WIDTHS ON THE 78 FORD FULL WIDTH AXLES ARE ONLY 1/2 INCH IS THAT 1/2 EACH SIDE OR 1/4 INCH EACH SIDE TOTALLING 1/2 INCH AND HAS ANYONE JUST BOLTED THEM IN WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS ? sorry for the caps im at work thats how i type here .

They are going to be wide unless you get some wheels with some backspacing. Most likely 3.5 ratio.

I don't know your skill level, but swapping in a radius arm f150/bronco d44 with coil springs isn't really that complex either.

I'm gonna keep the leafs to keep it easy and quick . Got a 2 year old little boy so not as much time in the garage as I use to have

Was thinking about the 1/2" that the guys are talking about in pad difference... Couldnt you run one shacle side inside the 'U' of the perch, you know clearancing the end to rotate ok inside the 'U' and shim a couple washers on the outside of the 'U' ans put it together and gain that 1/2 inch. You'v effectively moved the shacles in or out that 1/2 ....? Just a thought..

Gohot as far as i have read the 1/2 isnt that big a deal. its only on the front. im gonna have to weld new spring perchs on the rear no no problem there.
