I'm sure some of you saw the burned up yj for sale here a while back. well...i'm either crazy or stupid, but that is now my next project. the tub is in good shape just has surface rust all over it from the fire burning off the paint. the frame looks great and the axles i got for it aren't too bad either.

My plans as of now are to run the bronco 44 and 9" axles with a soa with reversed xj leaves. I'll be running some coils up front with extended radius arms. after sandblasting the tub i plan to dovetail the rear and make flat fenders up front.

this is as far as i've gotten other than collecting parts for the incomplete 44 i got and picking up some suspension parts. I plan to glass bead the tub soon. If anyone has any input let me have it as i go. i'm learning on this one.

i would run a tj front end but i really like the square headlight look, what can i say...i'm a cherokee guy! plus the grill is in perfect condtion.

thats cool... somebody has to use the square ones....

looks liek a good start, I know exactly how it is to start out with next to nothin.... itll go together bfor ya know it....

sounds like you got good plans... you wantin to comp cut the rear too i assume? how big u wantin to go with it?

the dove tail will look nice with the flat fenders to compliment it up front.

keep us posted. i can't wait to see the progress it makes as the weather warms up.

there was an 89 yj, 4.2 carb'd, 5 speed in durham for sale for 1650..... it was on raleigh's craigslist... might want to look into it if it's still available and you have the cash.... whether you used it for parts r you used it as your base... whatever...

i picked up some xj rear leaves today. Just need to build my rear bumper to hang the shackles from. I'm also going to try to cut out the flat belly pan this week. this build is going to take a while so don't expect to see anything changing too fast.

One question i had was what thickness 2 by 4 are most people using for the rear bumper/shackle mounting surface. i thought about getting a piece of .120 wall but then thought i should go with .188 wall instead. let me know what you guys think about this.

I used 3/16 on mine, works great

Just build a buggy. You're going to go through all of the trouble of turning that pos tub into a wheeler just to hack it all back up again...

I use .250 wall but i am overkill on everything. If it isnt 1/4" thick then it isnt strong enough in my book!

as far as building a buggy...when i'm done it will be the closest thing to one that still has a jeep frame under it.

I agree on overkill. but i'm thinking if the frame isn't even 120 wall than why go 188 wall on the rear shackle hanger/ bumper. Geeez...250 wall...i would have to re think my rear leaf set up...wouldn't i need some f 250 leaves to hold up all that weight???

nahhhh! Here is a YJ that we built with XJ rear leafs for a buddy of ours. Bolted the crossmemeber on... Maybe it will give ya a few ideas.

I say go for the jeep build. It may not be as economical as a buggy, but it will still be a jeep at least.

If I was you, I'd get a gallon of that stuff called Ospho and give the body a good bath in it ....it's a phosphoric acid solution used in the marine industry that neutralizes rust. works excellent.
