I'm mildly considering a YJ that is for sale, but has some known rust problems with the frame. How hard would it be to find a YJ frame in good shape, and how much should I expect to pay?

I see them periodically around here. I don't think that it would be terribly hard to find. I usually see them in the $350-500 range. Probably could have one for less than that if you're a good haggler.

EDIT: Of course, now that I said it, I just browsed the local c-list and the cheapest one I saw was $700...probably could haggle with a short stack of greenbacks on hand, though.

Why not buy the replacement frame sections and repair? It it completely gone?

I worry that more of the frame will become a problem in the future, and that 5-10 yrs down the road when I am repairing it for the 3rd or 4th time that I would be kicking myself for not just replacing it in the beginning.

I would never do that on a Jeep I was going to keep. Now, if I was just flipping one to a random stranger on the web, well...:flipoff2:

oh, you're funny... you should have seen the rust under the skid.. I replaced the frame on both sides there also. This is now my DD whilst building my XJ. My kid fusses every day about the mileage going up lol..
