I have a 88 Wrangler with the 4.2. If the jeep sits for a period of time (week) it took for every to crank. There would be no gas in carb or line. I would have to turn the motor over for a while for the gas to reach the carb. I had the return line above the inlet. Then I replaced the carb and same thing. Question is, can I block off the return to eliminate that route or install a check valve in the line? I don't want to burn the starter up. Also, once cranked the motor sounds fine. After heated up, a small tick, tick, tick the nothing then another tick, tick. It is in the top, dont know if it is a lifter, valve. Doesn't seem like it is the valve cause it isn't steady. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I had the same issue with a 4.2 Carb. My fix was I added a in-line fuel pump. I used a cheap purolator pump in line on the frame before it turns up to go to the carb. Wired in a simple switch and run it to fill carb bowl. Float will stop the flow just as it does with the mechanical pump. You hear the sound difference, cut the switch off, and crank it. Cheap easy fix and worked great for me.
As far as the tic tic tic, may be some slop in the valve train, and may also be an exhaust leak. depending on the hear of the head, and of the manifold.

That's one of the reasons I am collecting parts to install a Ford 302 w/EFI.
I did not want to go another winter with that carb.
Good idea on the pump install.
