I have a set of 4" springs for my YJ. 1988. How much tire can I cram under it for mild trail riding and street use? Also will I need to clock the pinions with that much spring under it?

the max tire you can get under there is 33's. you will probably benefit with 32's best. as far as pinion angles go the front will be fine, although you will have to do at least a TC drop for the rear driveshaft angle. You would benefit best from a sye kit and double cardan driveshaft. also for steering you may need a dropped pitman arm, longer trac bars, and extended sway bar end links and longer brake lines

yeah.... for that much work I think I will just skip that phase and go straight to full widths and spring over. Thanks for the input.
