YJ lift

A friend just bought a set of 31s and some aftermarket wheels for his yj. I have not seen them to see what kind of backspacing we're working with but he says they're rubbing when he turns. He wants to do a 2" lift to clear them a little. He bought some 2" blocks at pep boys but I told him that would actually lower it. What would be the easiest/economical way to lift this thing a little. I have never messed or even been under a yj. Should he go for an adaleaf in the rear and shackles up front or what? I told him about a body lift and that it would leave a gap and he wasnt too fond of that idea. He dosent wheel it so it will just be on the road. How to lift it? Thanks -Mike

cut the fenders would be cheapest, but seeing as how the body lift didnt go over too well, I doubt fender trimming will be accpetable.
I'd just get 4 lift springs, maybe longer shocks, ditch the track bars, install longer sway bar links or disconnects. That's not cheap though. Then you have the slip yoke, it will probably be good as is, but might develop a drip since the seal will be riding on a different section of the rear driveshaft.

This thing has a perfect body and paint so I'm not gonna even suggest trimming the fenders.

a yj would be leaf springs

mudders link brought me to 4wdH, but cookies on my computer autosorted to CJ products only. The OME graphic shows an XJ lift (coils plus add-a-leaf). When I changed "My Vehicle" to YJ, it showed lift kits in the $800 price range...definitely top of the line.

and dang, even looking at the 4wdH house brand (rumored to be a BDS kit), its $639 for 2".

check where the 31s are rubbing, maybe he could get by mallcrawling on new wheels or spacers.

A set of 2" shackles will allow 31's. I had 2' BDS shackles and 31x10.5's on stock rims, and they only rubbed when I disconnected the sway bar and stuffed the front or turned lock to lock and I had M/T's. You will need to get a longer pair of rear shocks and the bolts are a PIA to get out of the back because they are put in before the gas tank and will have to be cut out or remove the tank.

yeah I looked up a kit for a yj, and switched it back to tj and tried the link again. I didn't think it would do that. :shaking: my bad. :D

back to MichaelT: that kit will give you a great ride for an aftermarket suspension. but just a simple wheel spacer like RenegadeT suggested, or even a lift shackle for the front could help too, and it'll help level it out since most jeeps have a little front rake to it.

Yeah the OME is a great little lift, thats what I first put on my TJ. Hes not wanting to drop that much coin though.

Can you put extended shackles front and rear to bump it up a little, what else, just shocks and possibly sway bar extensions. I can't see needing track bar brackets just for going up ~2".

Thanks Guys

Some longer shackles should do the trick. I know he said no body lift, but a 1" is hardly noticable and would be easy to install.

ewwwwwwwww body lift lol i run an 89 yj no track bar 2 inch shackles and 2 inch springs with 33s it rides good and still handles well on the road i do have a sye and cv joint like was said it get exspensive

i had 31's on my yj stock no problem you just have to ajust the steering stop, the only thing with that is you you can no longer turn around in the middle of the road haahha, yea and to lift it a little shackle would be you best bet, maybe even shackle revesal kit, you can get one for 200 some places
