YJ transfer case shifter handle..pops off?

I know this sounds stupid, but I recently had ACL and Meniscus rebuild surgery- so I can't exactly crawl around under the Jeep at the moment- but the other day I went to shift into 4lo and the damn handle popped up off of the linkage?!?!?! I had to "feed" it back down on it from the top to get it back out. my question is...is there some type of ( missing on mine) retention system to hold the shifter from just pulling up off of the shifter? I can't see where anything holds it on? I am not a newb- just a bit "limited" in what I can do at the moment till I get healed up a bit better and was wondering if I'm missing something? I guess if no one has a "tip" or hint i will just crawl under there in a few months/ weeks and drill it and bolt it- but I would rather put it back the right way if I could.
