Ok so I'm a jeep guy lookin to learn a bit about yotas and maybe build one! What front axles are worth building, what axles do i WANT to put under a rig? From what everyone says I need to look into Longfeilds, but what else if there i need to know?

Anything you guys can let me know about yota front axles will be appreciated!

Here is a link to a good bit of info: http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/

What are you looking to put them in? Stock Toy front solid axles are passenger drop and ~55" WMS/WMS. That can be a little narrow without spacers or IFS hubs swapped on.

6x5.5" bolt circle. Closed knuckle w/ birfs. '85 was the last year and had the bigger stock truss on the axle.

i believe the 84 axle also has the longer truss too. they are tiny axles, id highly recommend a full top truss and diff guard. you also have several choices of chromoly shafts/birfs: longfields, trail-gear dirty 30s, and nitros. within my group we run all three of those and nobody has broken any of them. they all have lifetime warranties too. if you plan to lock the front then you'll need chromos, the stock shafts suck.

if you can find a high pinion front diff that would be pretty sick too!

I've got a set out of an 84 model pickup I am going to put in my Samurai some time next year. Some common upgrades I've seen due to failure are stonger or larger lockout/hub studs, and stronger steering arm studs.

You are going to want to find an 87 + IFS truck rear axle mainly for the extra width with a possible V6 third bonus. Like has been said, on the front, after running chromos the steering studs and hub studs will become the weak link. You will need to run some sort of hi steer unless you get creative with the stock arms and beefy tie rod setup.

^^x2. Keep the stock hubs as they are stronger than the aftermarket ones.

you may also want gussets for the steering stops and shock mounts. arp steering studs are pretty legit, though they better be at $11 a piece

Thanks for all the pointers!

Yager I might be pming ya a lot cause I plan on tossing this bad boy in my TJ.

Look for some FJ-80 axles. Alot stronger than minitruck axles, and a little wider so you don't have to run spacers. To give you an idea of a way to save some money too, I just bought a pair of axles from a 96' Lexus 4?? (lexus version of FJ-80) for $1100, that is with the factory E-lockers. So for $1100 I have axles that are strong enough to run 37's on, with E-lockers, and the rear already has disc brakes (and is full-float). The birf's on a FJ-80 are ALOT bigger than the minitruck birfs. The stock cruiser birfs will still break, but I think the longfield version of the cruiser birf is stronger than most D60 alloy shafts... I plan to run the stock birfs in my truck as I only plan to run 35's.

Look for pictures soon in my build thread (when I start one), I am building them with Ruffstuff fabricated housings to go under my 96' Tacoma.

x2 on the FJ80 parts depending on what size tire you want to run. The width is much better on the stock housing and as mentioned the stock birfs are larger. Just make sure the offset rear axle plays well with what your doing.

ive heard i should just look into a 84/85 front axle and thorw some longfeilds its way and call it a day! you guys still like FJ80s over an 8" with longfeilds?

I did a little searching for FJ80's yesterday out of curiousity. They seem to be like needles in a hay stack where as mini-truck axles are everwhere for $200-$300 pair.

As said it just depends on what tires size your gonna run and on what size/weight rig.

I'm running the 8" stuff on my jeep project with 35s. I'm running dirty 30s from ECGS and I have no doubt they will hold up just fine 'in my application'

If your in the 35"-56" range 8" stuff should be np unless your running a v8 or a throttle jockey. I've seen guys run 38s on mini-trucks w/ 4 clys and last just fine with more of the knuckle upgrades etc.. just depends...

Mini-truck axles are fine, cheaper/easier to find parts for, and plenty strong with some cromoly axles.

Main reason I went with the Crusier axles was I found the pair with e-lockers for $1100. In the long run I will save money as I don't have to buy lockers, convert to rear discs (which is cheap anyways), and the stock from birfs should be fine (for awhile) for what I'm using it for.

well for now ima keep my 4.0 and 35s.........when i go to 44 inch tires i HOPE to be on rockwells
