My buddy just bought just bought him a pretty well built yota the guy that had welded the rear differential. And my buddy wants to take that out and put a locker in. He don't want too expensive could y'all tell me some good ones to put in?

Detroit or grizzly for sure, very good. ARB's are a very good choice for the street, because you can 'turn em off'. Best but, most expensive choice

Of course, the less expensive alternative is the 'lunchbox locker'. Spartan or Lock-Rite. These are very good for light to medium duty part time offroad.

How often will he be driving it on the street? If not much, I would just keep the welded diff. I had lockrights in both of my last rigs. I have a full spool in the rear of mine now. I will never go back to a lockright even for an occasionally street driven rig. Yes, tire wear will be more, but the spool/welded rear is so much smoother and more predictable.

Just run some thornbirds. Those things are so hard that they will never wear out under the @$$ of a lightweight yota!

Problem is if you get a "lunch box" locker then you really ate guna have to replace your third!, easier then replacing your carrier and setting back up. If you go with a true locker then it will be the carrier and you will just install and re set up. I would say if money is tight find a good used third(someone may want to trade Your welded for their open) and put a Spartan in it, just my 2cents
