Another board members post about a dress watch got my head a stirrin. Little inward reflection if you will.
With all the things that can be used to identify your character. Self worth. Or maybe a deeper who you are by what has shaped you glimpse.
Do any of you gravitate toward an item of clothing or a simple accessory from time to time that shows a little about who you are deeper than the plain material object?
May something in your pocket? A general style, or maybe a constant habit that is a developed part of your persona?
So you catch yourself a bit nostalgic, may bow your chest out a bit and wear it like an earned "red letter"?

Now let's be clear, it's not bought and dressed up like modern flannel and a beard....

Over the year it's been well worn caps. Maybe a pair of boots. An occassional pocket knife. For years do to its use and actual quality to take earning that red busted knuckle, it's been this ol' Carhartt. Sweat and grease stained, tattered on the ends of the arms still doin it's job.

"You gonna wear that in public?" ......I get that look. Followed by a suttle smile. Cause she knows I earned it.
Its just a damned old work coat. But it's been a damn good life.

I've had this goodie since high school (graduated 06). It's been on many dates, alot of camping trips and alot of wheeling trips. Its soooo comfortable and I cant part with it yet.

I look like a hobo when I'm off from work. She quit asking if "that" is what I was wearing that day. I've got some favs but ultimately what happens is I wear it over and over till it becomes destroyed. About the only thing I have left from the old school is my first Carhart jacket my girlfriend bought me probably 20+ years ago. It's definitely hobo worthy. Much worse than the OP but I can't seem to let it go.

I had that same jacket years ago and loved it, but it got stolen by a homeless guy we were letting work around the shop. I figure he needed it more than me.

The only thing I keep on me all the time that I hate to be without and feel like it does make somewhat of a statement is my watch. Since it’s just a Fossil and not really “fancy” I didn’t post in the other thread. When I was in middle school Fossil watches got real popular. I always wanted one, and every time I went to the mall I’d stare at them. I begged my mom for one for years for my birthday and Christmas each year and never got it. She wouldn’t buy me a $75 watch but she’d bail her boyfriend out of jail and buy him a truck and tools for work over and over (rant over)
When my son was born my wife got me a Fossil watch. I would take a pic but it actually broke, the minute hand is swinging freely so I sent it in for repair. I hate being without it. I bought a cheap digital watch for the meantime and I don’t love it. In fact when I get mine back I doubt if I wear this thing again.

I’ll post a pic of my Fossil when I get it back.

For work I have to dress business attire, so when I am not at work, i usually look like a bum in either my overalls or mesh shorts and t-shirts. I despise having to dress up outside of work (well i don't love dressing up for work either but something has to feed this jeep addiction)

I wear my Eagle Scout belt buckle every day. Its on my leather belt that is always on. The only time I dont wear it is if im in a suit. It was a tradition in our troop that the previous man to get his Eagle gave the new one an Eagle Scout belt buckle at the ceremony. It was one of the proudest days of my life. Unfortunately, the troop is gone now and I was the last one to earn my Eagle there. So I have a spare when mine finally wears in two.

I guess my other "signature" is my knife. Ive had the same one since I turned 16. I went to wal mart and bought it just because I could (in my beat up 87 mighty max that was spray bombed OD green lol). Its a Gerber paraframe and is the best pocket knife Ive had. The clip wore out, so I bought a new knife and swapped the clips.

And yea, I have THAT coat. My old hunting coat is slap wore out. Its been attacked by a chainsaw, mice, and who knows what else. It has a big hole that I "fixed" in the back and is just in rough shape. But its the best wearing coat I own.

I built the buggy with my Stony Lonesome hoodie on probably 90% of the time.

It's trashed and had MIG spatter hole everywhere but I love this thing. Can't wait to go back there in May !

No wife/gf, so I wear what I buy and imma keep it for a while haha

I have something similar. Back in my old days, I had a pair of carhart insulated overalls I used while doing millwright work, rigging, ironwork, and pipe welding. Back then it was just a way to keep warm and work without concern.

it’s tattered and torn and full of holes and burns.

today, I am still in the industry but have moved on to management and rarely pick up any tools. So the real need for these has long expired. However, there is an occasion when it’s cold as hell at work and the warmth would surely be welcomed. I bring them out every once in a while and my contractors at work are surprised to see management with some well used clothing. It’s like a badge of honor. Where the guys know what it takes to get overalls that look like that and tend to be surprised to see them on someone in management as they always expect that we are just a bunch of desk jockeys without any real experience.

it’s certainly a conversation starter; comparing stains, holes, etc with my guys, and bonding with them in ways I never would have imagined.

I used to have several carhart jackets, but they seemed to disappear out of my work truck before I could really wear them out. The overalls always stuck around and to this day, they are in my truck for use when needed.

I'll only add this: One place I worked, one of the Office employee's was a man I thought to be about 60, at the time. Always suit & tie, white hair & white handlebar mustache. Very distinguished. We had to come in on one Saturday to do Inventory. I'm walking in, seeing a stranger, wondering Who is this? Haha, He was wearing a flannel shirt, raggedy blue jeans, & tennis shoes!

I guess the oldest clothing item I own is this OR hat. I have taken this hat with me everytime I have been camping/backpacking. I have used it to carry water from the creek to douse a fire, fill a radiator several times, and as a bucket when buddies tent leaked in a hurricane.

After some thought, I realized it is 22 years old and has never leaked.....

Used to have a Gerber paraframe also - still miss it. Can't find one local either. Now it's a s&w plastic handle, but had it a couple years.

Used to have an advance Auto Parts professional hat but it got gone and it was well loved. I still miss it. Been replaced with a Castrol hat that my buddy hooked me up with the purchase of house brand oil. =)

I was given a pair of Oakley razrwires with revant lenses years ago. I fell in love. I'm now 6 pairs later, and have a backup pair. They live on my hat, my desk, or if it's daytime, I'm wearing them.

Also carry a penlight, always.

And my Carhartt hoody. Got a new one this Christmas - hadn't worn it yet. Compared sizes with the one I have (both larges) and they are cut different. Sleeves are slightly longer on the new one. Gives me the option to have "nice" clothes to wear out when I'm not working. But like tonight. It was my old worn hoody, perma-oil-water-repellent with a few spatter holes.

And keen soft toe just over ankle high hiking boots are my everyday kicks. I get about 10 months from them, 6-7 good months where they are broken in, but before they are broken/leaky. Can't stand wet or cold feet. And I'm allergic to wool.

Between those listed items, you'll find me with them always anytime you see me. And I'm proud to have worn (condition) clothes - you know that I've put the work in to get them that way. But I can't stand having drafts from ripped jeans (or spatter falling in and down into shoes from the rips) or holes in my pockets. But the wife does get after me if we're going out. Heck she felt under dressed at Brasilia and she was better dressed up than me. I didn't much mind. Everyone else was dressed casually. Though my casual is comfortable casual.

Evidently this is not proper atire for a 50th b day party

Bumping this back up.....cause I found one of my favorite work shirts! I hate working in thick t-shirts and this baby feels like that silk shirt you wore on picture day in the 7th grade! Perfect 50/50 polycotton blend....shes wore thin.

Edit:And I think my wife has given up hope that I'll wear anything remotely decent looking except for Sunday mornings....and she still not 100% sure on that one.

My left pocket holds a Gerber pocket knife that a high school friend gave me 27 ish years ago and a bear claw my gf at the time now wife brought back from her study abroad summer in Alaska. Dodge keys in right pocket.

My grandmother gave me a relatively high end leather jacket when I turned 16. It's worn out, has holes and tatters everywhere, but it's my go too outer layer in winter working outside, out to dinner, church, whatever. I have stopped wrenching in it though to try and preserve it for another 30 years.

And the same pair of boots everyday for the last 16 or so years. Been known to sport them with shorts too...

Why am I telling you people this???
