ebay and the assholes that put something on there and have the "Make Offer" option. Then when you make an offer they turn you down. So you email them directly to ask them what their bottom dollar is only to have them turn around to tell you the "Buy It Now" price. What was the point of the Make Offer option then if you're just going to turn everyone down and tell them to pay full price? Enjoy your afternoon.

I have experienced the same thing or I've made and offer and they would only accept it maybe $5 less than what they were asking. It's just pointless!

When they reject it...they're still keeping it open to the highest bidder, just behind the scenes. I'd bet if you were the highest 'best offer' you'll get a note after the auction ends, if the item doesn't re-list...you weren't. If it does re-list...then the guy is a delusional dick.

On the other hand, I hate the people that get pissed off when I don't accept their lowball offer. I have something for sale for $40 and some guy our West wants to buy it. Makes me a $20 offer so I say "$38 is best I can do with free shipping since you are so far away" and they come back with a "$25 is my final offer" note on their next offer. Sometimes that happens and I decline their $25 offer and then they buy it for $40.

I'm not sure if NC4x4 or Craigslist is worse, but people always ask "whats the least you'll take" to which I reply "what's the most you'll offer?" :D

I don't mind people asking "what's my bottom dollar" because I don't lie and tell them exactly what I need out of it but when they phrase it like that it makes me want to tell them to hit the bricks. I like a good haggle but when your bluntly being a cheap ass no me likey.

I don't like throwing out the first number because I really don't want to over pay, but even worse is throwing a number out and insulting a guy. That said...if I can't even get a feel for what the guy is looking to get, I'll definitely hit him below the belt, and then play dumb about the market. I actually have two tilt steering columns, a complete cruise control system and a Ford GT steering wheel for 73-79 fords coming to my door for $290 shipped because the guy was being a doink, and didn't know what he had. If he woulda flat out said he didn't know what the items were worth and he wasn't familiar with what he had...I would have told exactly what they were worth. But c'mon, don't try being a know it all and then haggle on something you're clueless about. I'll be more than willing to triple or quadruple my on this deal.

That's nonsense. Why would you post an "asking price" if you then just turn around and give them a firm price? If it's firm, I say so. If it's not, I say OBO. Sometimes people make stupid offers and they get it, just because I'm in a mood to get rid of something. Other times, they don't. Mostly, people email asking what my "bottom dollar" is and get ignored because they don't understand what it means to haggle.

I'm using that line from now on. And yeah I get that bullshit a lot. I guess people have forgotten negotiating skills.

Fawking awesome!

How about the people that say "I want to get $400 but I'll take $250...".
To me that means we're starting at $250.:D

Nearly exact thing happened to me recently on ebay. Had a buy it now of ~$360, and a make offer posting available. I sent an offer of $300ish expecting to settle around $320-330.... seller replies with buy-it now price as only option.

I bought something else.

That depends for me...I can appreciate the honesty, and if $250 is a good price, I usually won't haggle much. As much as I hate when people low ball me, I don't want to be 'that guy' to someone else.

I've used that before but not to that extreme. Basically, I need to get rid of it and here's a good deal for you. If you don't want it then I'll continue to leave the price at $whatever till I get another bite.
