Just purchased an 03 Civic Hybrid for almost nothing. The car was dead as a doornail when i loaded onto trailer. I put in new 12v battery and lights worked, etc, but key was a nogo for the starter.

I was able to roll-start the car(Its a 5spd manual) and have driven it about 10 miles, everything seems fine, the battery gauge for the assist battery was orginally near zero, but came up to about 80% charge when I got to where I parked it. Hit the key to re-start and it still does nothing. How long does the assist battery pack need to charge for the car to start normally? Or should it now? any chance of a starter problem? Most info I can find on Google is for automatics.

Thanks!

Is the check engine light on? The shop i work at has been seeing alot of the first model civic hybrids coming in with a check engine light on for a bad hybrid battery pack and they all say well i just bought the car for nearly nothing. A new one will run you around 2-3 grand. Sounds like this may be what you have going on so i would take it to your local repair shop of choice and have it scaned before putting anymore money into it. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps and not trying to scare you because these are still great cars and right now the NC DMV will give you a one year waiver for inspection if the hybrid battery pack has the check engine light on.

I don't know the specifics, but my uncle bought a civic hybrid (03ish) with a dead battery and then found out the there was a recall or something on the battery and they replaced it for free. I'll contact him and see what the details were.

I'm into the car at less than scrap price, so I am definately going to look more into fixing it. Not to mention I drove it about 30 miles stop and go last night and averaged 51.3 MPG. From what I have googled more, and the way the car acts, I think the Hybrid batts are fubared, Like you said 4wheelbum.. which is waaay better than pulling motor/trans for the asist motor..I think?? what is really killing me is that there is really nothing else wrong with it and the extra 20-25 MPG over my current Civic DD will add up quickly.

Well the reman battery in the link above is just under $2k. So how long will it take you to recoup that?
Then you can decide if it's worth more to flip the car or take the gas savings.
