So my buddy just bought a lowered street truck. After he gets it home he is going over it and sees that the previous owner decided to cheap out on the front coil springs. Instead of getting new lowering springs the previous owner apparently heated up the stock springs and clamped a couple rungs together to achieve the lower stance.

So it got me thinking, what other crazy things have you guys seen previous owners do to cars/trucks that you bought?

On my 1990 F150, somebody cut a hole in the bed to change the fuel pump then welded it all back together. (oh wait, that was me...) ((Seemed easier than fighting rusted bolts))

My commando had a Toyota bucket seat for a driver's seat. There was a 2x4 bolted through the floor under the front seat mounts. Then the nailed a nail halfway through the mount into wood, and bent it over.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...

New it had a little body rust and had had floor pans put in.
Didnt know the floor pans were aluminum printing sheets. Not exactly sure what they were, but when we tore outt he carpet I had an aluminum newspaper ads from 1977

My '89 4Runner... which I bought at an auction... came complete w/ a repo notice... in spanish... stuffed under the pass. seat. That should have been sign!

Some joker had replaced all the carpet... with interior (AKA house) carpet! I think was originally black (ish) but was so sun faded it was more of a light gray. And funky funky funky odor lol. The back "bed" area, there was a vinyl liner, which had foam padding adhered to the bottom... covered by a layer of the black carpet... covered by yet another layer of indoor/outdoor carpet. Probably > 1" total lol.

Telling on myself here. When I sold my Commando the throttle linkage was a dress shoe lace and some coat hanger. Friggin worked almost better than the cable. It had over 2 years on it with zero issues.

Bought an 83 cutlass that had the rear wheel cylinders welded to the backing plates.

Bought a Hyundai once, previous owner had dropped the oil pan and cut strips of beer cans and put on the rod and main bearing so that it didn't knock. It lasted about 500 miles, ended up selling knowing it had to have a crank with bearings for way less than I paid.

:rockon:lol thats actually kind of a slick trick

an awful lot of work for the return, bearings aren't that expensive, I can see doing it to get yourself out of a jam, I've heard of using leather to do the same, but to intentionally do this so you could pawn your junk off on some unsuspecting buyer, I'd have to hunt that person down and feed them the remains, no excuse for shit like that.

temporary fix for hole in gas tank take wet bar of soap stick over hole and spray over with cheap spray bomb paint actually works for a while

I fixed a small hole in my gas tank with a screw and rubber washer.

I bought a Cherokee with beer cans cut to cover small rust holes , found 2 boxes of 243 rounds stashed in passengerquarter panel behind panel in same jeep lol

I bought a 97 XJ 200 miles from home on Ebay after talking to the owner an being assured it would make the drive home with no problems. No need to trailer it home he said. Went to the bank to transfer the title, and on the way back to drop the PO off at his house the driver side engine mount failed and allowed the driveshafts to hit the crossmember and stop us dead in the middle of Friday afternoon traffic. He said his friend must have forgotten to tighten the bolts on that side when they installed the engine. Got 1K back and rented a trailer, got it home and found out that the engine block had two stripped bolt holes and one broken out. Then I found out this had not just happened. They had tried to weld the mount to the cast block to remedy this problem. That should have been a sign to me. Found many more hack jobs and eventually parted it out. Spent waaay more time troubleshooting than being on or off road. Anyway, that's the story of why my username an pic don't match.
