Red Oak Brewery Tour...

An hour of listening to the brew master explain the ins and outs from beginning to end, he had a great sense of humor and made it interesting...

Then free refills on beer from 4pm to 5pm? And a sweet Red Oak beer glass?

If I had drank that many Red Oak/ Hummingbird/ Blackbird (hummingbird/battlefield mix) at any bar around here it would have cost me a fortune... I probably had 12-15 beers, figure $3 a piece... lol.

I had wanted to go for years but finally got our act together today. Was an awesome time and I can't think of a better way to spend $10 on a friday, if you have never been I highly advise you all to go.

The brewmaster is a little pretentious/ridiculous, otherwise it really is an awesome and well put together place. Too bad we can't get red oak in WNC.

I've noticed that. When I bartended in Charlotte we had it on tap and I've never seen it in Asheville. I think it's because they are unpasteurized beers and can clog keg lines if not maintained properly. The Budweiser guy would clean our lines but that was few and far between. I would not trust Budweiser with my product either.

Sounds like they are pretty liberal with their pours and that's always ok in my book!

Actually it's because they don't really use any preservatives in the beer (that and its unpasteurized, like you said), so they can't ship it too far. I believe that's what the brewmaster said. The tour is well worth it.

My dad used to drill at the Naval Reserve base down the road back when the Red Oak BrewPub was open. He has a huge mug (

) he got from the owner because they would go and spend so much cash there.

The Brew master was a little out there, but it was my first time going, so I didn't really mind and I talked to him more while we drank at the end and thought he was a pretty laid back funny dude. They are talking about expanding more this year within the state, I know you can get Red Oak in Wilmington now and thats further than Marion. Just thought it was a really cool experience.
I bought 2 growlers, one of hummingbird and one of red oak, 2 for $25. And a jar of the Malt Jelly (which is stupid delicious) for $5.

Ill probably go back again within a month with some other friends.

Love red oak. Need to do this tour badly. Is it only on Fridays and Saturday's?

Every single time I drive past the brewery I tell myself I need to take the tour. I think this thread was enough to motivate me

Took it about 2 years ago. Always loved Red Oak, but that made me realize just how much they care about their product. And that malt jelly is crazy good!

Tour is only on Fridays, every Friday at 3pm. Get there at 2:30.

Yeah, the tour is only on fridays, starts at 3 pm. Like Phil says we got there about 2:30 and by 3:00 there were about 75 people there, it was packed. We had a small group this time, but we all talked about it this weekend with friends around the fire and what not and next time Im expecting us to have a pretty big group going.

They do care about the product, the purity law is pretty crazy, but Ill tell you I really enjoy the beer so whatever they are doing flat out works.

Agreed.
Ive got a friend who doesnt drink and has a suburban.
a couple more together and make a friday out of it!

Could probably get a good sized group to go just from NC4x4. Might be a cool event to plan.

I went a few weeks ago on a business trip. Tour was cool, brewmaster was funny but full of himself as said. The Red Oak there tasted better than I've had at other places, but still low on the list of good beers for me. But I do like the glass I got.
