got a jeep :bounce2: got no title :( need to get a title I get the runaround from the DMV:kaioken:
anybody give me a little info on how this state handles vehicles that have lost their title but got have got a new owner???

IF you have a friend in LE, they can run the VIN and get a name, and last known address. The rest is up to you to get them to go with you to the DMV
 
If you dont know the previous owner, or any contacts of a previous owner, you can file yourself. Its a fawkin PITA, the dmv in NC will ream your cornhole anyway it can. First, you need to take the vin # to the dmv and get their estimated value, also while you are there get a mvr-1 and an indemnity bond form. Then you need to get a bond from your insurance co. for 1.5 times the value the dmv gives you. Once that is done, back to the dmv and setup an appt. for a license & theft officer to come and inspect the vehicle, if it passes his inspection, you can then file the mvr-1, indemnity bond, and the theft officers report for a lost title. Once the paperwork is filed, you can wait 6 to 8 weeks for the title.

Neither does the person at the title office. Find a signature and someone willing to notarize it.

Hope your not very busy in the enar future.
If the vehicle ever got reported stolen (since you don't know the entire history of it) good luck tryin' Yes officer I am driving it, Yes sir I did forge the title document but I didnt steal it I promise....

The last time I had a title notarized I had to show a drivers license
 
what if i've got a title and VIN tag from the windshield, but no jeep? could i sell to someone legally? or should i just tear it up and forget about it?

in my situation, i parted the jeep out, and junked the frame as it was no good, but i still have the title/VIN tag... and the new project has its own, so i don't need the title from the jeep.

technically you cant sell just that IIRC, but you could sell a vehicle with that title and VIN "for parts"
 
Here's another, and this one is legal. If you have a buddy with a garage, he may be able to get a title via a mechanics lein. It takes a little time but is very doable. If the Jeep was reported stolen prior to starting this process, it might not work so well.

Legal?
Other than the fraudulent bill for which he is applying for the lein.
To get a mechanics lein you need damages that need to be recouped. I guess you could have him change your oil and then neever pay him. But then the fraud would just be passed to you for not paying a debt.

I'm not trying to bust balls, and there is no good, easy answer.
You may be perfectly fine going this way, just make sure you are aware of thee potential cost.
At least it will be an informed risk
